Helping to Protect the Most Vulnerable: my time with Save the Children and UNICEF

Fiona Herbert was a child protection consultant in the refugee camps in Kenya and Nairobi. She was living in Dubai when she decided she wanted to go to Kenya because there was a need for people who did jobs like her and her husband was able to find work there as well. Her job in child protection, the word used to describe the policies and procedures of keeping a child safe, was working with victims of child labor, neglect – mainly because of poverty and many other things.

She loves working with people and thinks that if you can impact a child’s life positively, then it’s worth it. Which also effects her current job, which is at UWC, as one of the counselors,

UNICEF works with many other smaller companies to fund manpower for these types of jobs. One of their goals being to strengthen relationships between agencies to make transitioning from trauma for kids easier so they don’t have to repeat communication about their traumatic experiences again and again. Now, she wants to get back to doing one on one work because she can feel like she’s part of the team because many others care about the individual students that come to the counseling office.

I feel like this story is important because she’s able to express her desire to help children without thinking about other repercussions because she cares mainly just about how she can make a child’s life easier.
