Robyne Hayes

Robyne Hayes is a photographer and a researcher of girls and women in Ethiopia and Bangladesh. She told us about how she feels that photography is a very good medium to tell stories of people whom we can’t possibly imagine their life of. When I saw the pictures that she took, it was not particularly anything that I expected it to be. I was expecting like photos that were taken from a great angle or something that was taken on purpose. But what I saw was photos that captured a lot of stories and even though it was very simple pictures that I probably could have taken, the photos were inspiring. I was inspired by the eagerness of her to help the girls from Child marriage. She went to the countries to actually talk to them and form a group of people. I especially liked the pictures where girls were laughing because If I were there, I would take pictures of girls looking sad because that is what we usually do. We take pictures of inconvenience when we go to poor countries but instead she took a photo of girls trying to live hard.

  1. I think that you bring up a very interesting idea here about how people like to only take pictures of the bad things and only show the hardships of peoples lives. The fact that this person decided that the bad things is not what they want to capture and show is inspirational and a good thing. This breaking away from the norm and trying to show how these people survive and live and not just show pictures to gain empathy and make people feel bad is good and also defies what the news does a lot. The news seems to only report on the bad things, not the good things that we should sometimes also focus on and celebrate.
