Digital safety

Through these PSE classes, I learned for the first time that there are many types of cyberbullying. For example, I thought that cyberbullying is sending hate messages to a person but instead, I learned how typing hate comments on social media or making fun of someone through social media can also lead to cyberbullying.

One of my friend from other school told me that she has experienced cyberbullying and she told me how she felt very excluded even though there were still people who supported her. At that time, she told me how her “self-esteem” went down rapidly and made her seem useless. Even though this is not a physical bullying, it can hurt the person’s feeling very much as much as the physical bullying.

One of the question during this unit made me think.

“Is social media reality or ideal”

I thought that this question was something we all know and yet we try to pretend we don’t know the answer to it.  For example, when we post things on social media, we put filters, take many pictures and choose the best one. I thought that this is very true because when I flick through the posts, I can see photos that look very fun but if it wasn’t considered to look “fun” then it would be hard to show that without many takes. I didn’t realise that what we all usually do with posts are because of peer pressure and how we want to look better than we actually are in order to “fit in” to the society. So my final question is “Does social media brings up or down our self-esteem?”
