In project week, i was in group 4 and we planned to go to Cambodia to do both service and activity. For service we decided on supporting Kuma which we go to interact with the kids in cambodia. In the planning process, we decided on a global issue we are all interested in and we looked forward to engaging with the kids in cambodia. Across the boarder we all felt nervous but at the same time we were excited to plan to make changes in their lives.

In the process of planning the project week, we had to take ethical consideration into account. For example, minimising plastic waste since we were going to be moving around the country a lot by cycling. We did not want to produce much waste in the process. Thus what we bring was carefully considered as well.

Culturama 2

LO 4 Working collaboratively with others

LO 5 showing perseverance and commitment

Culturama now has ended and as i reflect on the experience i recognise that this culturama is largely different from the past years due to COVID 19. There were many measures to be taken into consideration. But due to this rare pandemic, I feel that we were able to work much more collaboratively. Everyone took care of each other and making sure we are all following the rules.

At the same time, due to strict measures a lot of us were stressed. But everyone worked well and showed their perseverance and commitment throughout the period. This perhaps was because everyone had passion for the dance and everyone encouraged each other to get through this as a group. In a lot of sense these 2 learning outcomes are related to each other.

Culturama ’20 #1

LO1 Identify your own strength and area for development

LO 2 Demonstrate that challenge has been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

This year in culturama, i have decided to audition for Kenya. This is my 4th and last year of culturama and I am glad i got into my first choice. I really wanted to join Kenya because it is an african traditional dance with upbeat which interested me when I watched the audition video. This is a little of a challenge because I am asian and i have never danced African dance before. For the past 3 years i did Japan, Korea and Korea again. Although I think that I am a dancer with a lot of experience, I am only experienced and certain type of dance. This experience will allow me to develop a new type of dance. i am looking forward to expand my dance skills into new area and expose myself to something new for my last year of culturama.

Continuation of CAS during corona outbreak

LO 7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Due to corona outbreak, school has been closed for a month now and will continue so till June. Therefore, a lot of my activities such as circus training and season 4 sports have been cancelled. For me CAS activities are one of the things that helps me keep myself healthy and fit. Since they are unable to go on, while the remote learning, I have started to initiate my own activity to keep myself fit during this period.

One of the things I do is cycling along the coast everyday. It has always been one of my favourite thing to do in my pastime but never really had time for it. I’m back at it again so I am very happy about it. I do around 10 to 20 km per day of cycling. One thing I started to do is running. I was never really interested in running because I had this feeling that it is too tiring for me. But in order to keep my stamina, I started off with 5km run around 3 times a week. It is something I enjoy now. I am glad that even though unexpected outbreak occurred, i am able to continue to do something to keep myself engaged to CAS experience. CAS has helped me shape my choices and action I make through this period.

Dance showcase #3

LO 1: Identifying own strengths and develop areas for personal growth

Dance showcase has now ended. It was a lot of difficult time, and it has been very challenging for me the past few months. Despite having a lot of ups and downs, in the end me and ami (my dance leader partner) were able to create a great piece. Through this, we learned that compromising is one of the most important thing. We cannot put all our ideas into our piece and it was very important to select who’s idea was better. Another thing is communicating. We lacked communication to our dancers despite our effort, and we caused some problem in the end due to lack of communication. When leading a large group of people, I realised that constant communication is a must. Although we made a lot of mistakes at times through this journey, I think I was able to grow as a leader. Now, leading a group of people has become one of my strength even thought before it used to be more of a challenge. I would like to continue to grow as a leader.

IB Dance Group piece: Xinyi Wang (Choreographer)

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

During season 3, i joined Xinyi Wang’s IB dance group piece. This is one of the graded exam piece for her where she will choreograph a piece and we will perform it. It was my first time joining a group piece for IB dance but it was one of a good experiences I had. The most challenging thing we faced was time because we had about 5 days to learn it until the performance and in our first run through we didnt know what we were doing. After the first run through everyone was about to give up on the show but we all encouraged each other to try make it for the show the day after. In the end we were able to overcome it by giving it a 100% during practice for lunch and after school right before the show. On the show we were able to do it to its maximum due to this. Through this experience I learned that if we all collaborate and give each other a 100%, even if it is not great in the beginning it can really be overcome. To me it is one of the most valuable experience because i learned a lot about the importance of resilience.
