Cartoon as a medium

  • communicate idea very quickly
  • humorous
  • has immediacy
  • finding balance between humour and offense
  • challenges an idea

Key word i could use

Poem: Mrs Darwin

Notes for the Oral

Introduction (include context) to both texts and bodies of work by each author

I would like to explore ‘Mrs Darwin’ by carol Anne Duffy and ‘Cemetery of women’ by Lisa Donnelly. ‘Mrs Darwin’ is a poem written by Carol Anne Duffy is an extract from a poetry collection called “The World’s Wife”. A lot of her poem presents the western patriarchal society from the women’s point of view. One of which is ‘Mrs Darwin’ which focuses on the representation of the identity of women, written in a short diary form from the perspective of Mrs Darwin who is a wife of a scientist that discovered the theory of evolution.

Lisa Donnelly is a cartoonist whose body of work consists of simple line drawings, some short dialogue and makes a point about the patriarchal society through humour. ‘Cemetery of Women’ is one of her cartoons that puts its emphasis on the same theme as the poetry ‘Mrs Darwin’. The way in which the women are portrayed is by their role in the society rather than as individuals.

  • Talk about 2 texts
  • In the intro talk about their style and characteristics (i won’t go over the details here)
  • They have common themes

Text 1: Thesis overview in relation to focus

This poem portrays Mrs Darwin’s frustration in the difference in ways in which women and men are recognised and identified.

Text 1: 3 Main compositional/textual features

  •   The title: ‘Mrs Darwin’
    • She is defined through her husband’s last name rather than her own
    • Suggests how she is under husband’s control
    • Does not have her own identity
  •    The insult she makes towards her husband: also presenting the issue
    • She is making a scientific point, but also insulting her husband by comparing him to a chimpanzee
  • Diary form
    • It may mean that women usually oppressed by the societal norms and that they cannot express their feelings
    • Diary is a form where she can express her frustration

Text 2: Thesis overview in relation to focus

This cartoon portrays how afterdeath, women are only recognised and remembered by their role as a wife and mother, rather than by their individuality. Their identity is being taken over by their role in society and that is portrayed here.

Text 2: 3 Main compositional/textual features

  •  “Whats her name: A good wife” short mementoes
    • This can be likened to ‘Mrs Darwin’, how the woman is recognised as one that serves the husband and fulfills her duty as a wife rather than her herself.
  •    The graveyards are packed very tightly and possibly not maintenanced very well
    • Women are not prioritised, respected and unimportant

Concluding point (link both texts) in relation to focus

This reinforces the social stereotype of women as housewives, who serves men. Both Lisa Donnelly and Carol Ann Duffy draw attention to this social idea, while using humour and insult to reduce the severity of the claim.

Local Service #2

LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in your CAS experiences

As season 2 is coming to an end, I have developed a few skills. One of the things I have learned it the importance of persistently developing on one skill. In the beginning of my journey in this local service, I was only able to ride a unicycle. Nowadays, due to continuous practice, i am able to ride a giraffe unicycle as well as a little bit of hopping on them. I am happy that my skills are developing through consistent practice. I hope that through this, one day i can perform it in one of the circus performances.

The interactions with our service partner will hopefully start in season 3, so I really look forward to interact with kids and teach them the circus skills I learned.

Paper 1 – Analysing advertisement reflection

What i need to improve on

  • make points of interpretation instead of just description
  • deeper unpacking on the language is needed
  • Dont use general terms – be specific about the context
  • be careful in the phrasing – make the point i am making clear
  • the woman is not real, she is characterise to fit the purpose
    – can soup which means woman can use the time to prepare food more efficiently on making herself look more beautiful
  • look for repetitions and patterns – there was a recurring theme of home
  • In the introduction, i need to make what my interpretation of the advertisement is
  • A lot of the time i assume that the person reading my essay will understand me; i need to explain my points a little more
  • grammar, punctuation

Option’s evening

Before the options evening, I wasn’t sure whether I should take HL Math and drop Bio or take HL bio and drop math. When I heard the fact that HL math learns twice the amount in 3 lessons while SL has 2 lessons to learn half of HL. This is how I realised that it is going to be very challenging for me especially because I take extended now. HL bio seemed to be capable so I decided on that.  I talked to many of the current business students and they talked about how if I have econs background it would be nicer to take business because you can learn both economies itself and firms. HL Japanese seems to be okay but I think that it is going to be challenging hearing the G12 student’s talk.

G10 Mock exam

1. Personal Response

I was pretty happy with my mark because there weren’t many silly mistakes. I also improved from low 5 (Last year) to a low 6 and I felt that this is because I made sure I was prepared for the test. The paper 6 was well done, I just missed a few marks from not knowing some concepts but generally, it was good. My paper 4 was okay, it wasn’t good or bad. I didn’t know how to do some of the questions and I missed a few from not using keywords. paper 2 was the worse because I am generally bad at MCQs in all subjects. I get confused because sometimes I feel like they are all right and all wrong. I have to consolidate my understanding so I know the answer straight away.

2. Exam techniques

I think that it is very important to look back at what you have done so leave some time to review the paper during the exam. So I can spot silly mistakes. Also in science, it is important to use keywords because you can lose a lot of marks for them.

3. Keywords and equation

Physics usually have a lot of keywords compared to other sciences because they really want you to be specific. I should make a Q card with all equations. But this exam, I was okay with the equations and physics in general and I didn’t lose many marks.

osmosis, intermolecular forces, collisions, constant

4. Conceptual understanding

I think that I understood physics the most, I was able to answer the questions concisely with keywords. But chemistry caught me out a little especially remembering things such as speed for sound and name of chemicals. I also need to study the limestone.

5. Looking forward

I need to definitely practice MCQ because if I do well for that I can increase my mark for sure. I also need to revise chemistry in general because it’s my weakest subject. I find it really hard for me to understand chem.

Mocks reflection

I started reviewing a month before because I still wanted to make sure I get sufficient sleep right before the mocks and also didn’t want to break my routine. One of the things I should be careful during exams is the amount of unhealthy food I eat. Before and during mocks, I usually felt some stress to have to take time out to study more than usual and also I wanted to do well. So every time I study, I ate some unhealthy food like chips and cookies as a reward for my self. This actually motivated me to study and made it productive, though this was an unhealthy choice for me. I need to think of a better way for myself to motivate studying.

Digital safety

Through these PSE classes, I learned for the first time that there are many types of cyberbullying. For example, I thought that cyberbullying is sending hate messages to a person but instead, I learned how typing hate comments on social media or making fun of someone through social media can also lead to cyberbullying.

One of my friend from other school told me that she has experienced cyberbullying and she told me how she felt very excluded even though there were still people who supported her. At that time, she told me how her “self-esteem” went down rapidly and made her seem useless. Even though this is not a physical bullying, it can hurt the person’s feeling very much as much as the physical bullying.

One of the question during this unit made me think.

“Is social media reality or ideal”

I thought that this question was something we all know and yet we try to pretend we don’t know the answer to it.  For example, when we post things on social media, we put filters, take many pictures and choose the best one. I thought that this is very true because when I flick through the posts, I can see photos that look very fun but if it wasn’t considered to look “fun” then it would be hard to show that without many takes. I didn’t realise that what we all usually do with posts are because of peer pressure and how we want to look better than we actually are in order to “fit in” to the society. So my final question is “Does social media brings up or down our self-esteem?”
