Personal Statement 2019

Since I have been at the United World College of South East Asia East Campus since K1 (back in Ang Mo Kio), I am very familiar with this school’s mission to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Throughout my time at this school, I really feel connected with this mission in addition to this school’s goals and have been exemplifying my understanding of these elements into my everyday life. For example: as the chair of my service, Capturing East, we have worked towards our mission of celebrating the support staff throughout our school using multiple mediums which directly stem from the diverse education I have received throughout the years.

One day, when I was younger, I told myself to remember that specific moment in time forever. It wasn’t anything special; I was sitting at the dinner table waiting to eat. But that’s what was so special about it. It was so normal. I told myself to remember that moment so whenever I was sick, in pain, injured or something, I would think back to that and make myself work towards that. I’ve noticed that I’ve become good at that throughout the years: think ahead to the future and how my actions could have an effect on what might happen next. Most of the time I’m right. And when I’m wrong, I build on that, make myself think smarter, be better.

It’s like a game of poker, and I’m just playing against nature. Sometimes I get a good hand. Sometimes I don’t. Either way I’m gonna screw it up somehow. But it’s all learning; it all doesn’t matter. There aren’t any repercussions. Not yet, anyway. One day I’m going to have to buck up. I hope that day takes its time.
