  • What have I learned about creating meaning through the interaction of visual and lexical elements?

I learned that not only can meaning be conveyed through the use of language, but visuals are also an important part of creating meaning. For example, symbolism is something that is very important in creating meaning through the use of visual and verbal elements. I learned that to have an object (or person etc.) representing something else isn’t enough, we also have to connect that object to the rest of the text/cartoon/drawing, so that it all creates kind of a mind map of the different ideas that are needed to be conveyed through that piece.

  • How are ideas communicated through the interaction of visual and lexical elements?

Putting a lot of thought into what goes into the text, or the image is really important in my opinion because that is what creates the depth of meaning. Not only does there need to be 1 layer of meaning, but also many different ones, so that by peeling off those layers, deeper insight and context is revealed. Also, the ideas that are presented can be interpreted in many different ways, so I think that by using a symbol, there can’t be one correct way of seeing things like there are always 2 sides to the argument, and this has to be presented so that people can shape their own opinion.

  • What are the similarities and differences between an opinion article and a political cartoon?

I think there are many similarities in an opinion article and political article. Some of them being that both present some kind of opinion to the world, to show how they see an issue. There are also different sides presented in both, to help the reader formulate which side they stand on. However, the author tries to argue why their opinion is the most reasonable.

I think one difference between them is that in a political cartoon, it is not explicitly stated what the opinion is, but by analysis that has to be figured out. While in an opinion article, it is stated, but needs to be unpacked to show the author’s beliefs and values. Another difference is that a political cartoon uses visual elements, while an opinion piece uses verbal elements (while images and visuals can be used too).
