Service Reflection #2

Yesterday (9th December), our service decided to head to Tampines to conduct a Sunday recycling session. This was a very enjoyable and relaxing experience, allowing me to have a unique experience. At the recycling session, we were given a presentation on the environmental effects of recycling incorrectly, and I really thought that this was quite interesting; it never occurred to me that even the small things I might accidentally choose to recycle may have detrimental consequences to the other materials in the recyclables. I think by learning these things, I have made progress in learning objective 6 – I have recognized the larger implications of my actions and I understand the value in working towards a more recycle-friendly Singapore.

Furthermore, it was very interesting to see the other volunteers, who had not all come from other backgrounds. Although I did not know anyone there, they were all supportive in that I felt comfortable asking anyone for help as all of us were working for this common goal. I think that by not only working with my peers from school but also strangers who were volunteering, I have made a certain progress in learning objective 5 that I have never made before. Although working in my team was important, working in the larger team was also extremely important and being a team player truly helped that.

ACTIVITY (CULTURAMA FINAL)

It has been over a month since I have finished my Culturama, however, I have not had the chance to complete a reflection on the activity as a whole. Participating in Culturama opened up many opportunities for me, especially in personal development as an individual. I feel that through the entire Culturama experience, I have achieved learning objectives 1,2 and 4. By participating in something that is different to what I would normally try, I have found something that is unique and something that I do truly enjoy. Through trying to develop my expertise in Indian dancing, I feel that I have made progress in LO1. So much so, in fact, that I have decided to participate in Kahaani, which in addition to developing my expertise in dancing will furthermore fulfil my CAS requirements for activities. Although I do feel that dancing has been a very rewarding part of my CAS journey so far, it has taken some discipline from my end and commitment to giving dancing my all. As mentioned previously, dancing is not in my comfort zone, however, by having a continued effort in addition to being a regularly engaged member of the dance, I’ve been able to commit to making myself the best performer I could be.

I feel that Culturama has been a great experience personally, and I feel that there is much that I was able to take away from it as a whole. I look forward to the upcoming Kahaani and hopefully doing a similar dance next year.

Service Reflection #1

I have been actively participating in service. I have been elected Vice-Chair of the service, earning my spot on the leadership team. On Friday (28/9), my service conducted a cleanup for a dinner hosted by a Global Concern. It started from 7:30 and ended around 8:50 PM. I think that doing this cleanup was representative of my commitment to my service for being adapting to the changes, especially because I stayed for longer than I was supposed to. Furthermore, I have been keen on staying back late for participating in my service, and through these 2 I think I have once again achieved parts of LO4. Furthermore, I had the chance to collaborate with my peers and through this, I think that I have achieved LO5, as I took different roles in the cleanup (counting, drying dishes, stacking etc.) and was always willing to help during the cleanup. Attached below is a photo of me and a peer collaborating.

Activity Reflection #1

These past two weeks have been great in terms of personal growth and contributing to my CAS. In the past two weeks, I have been training hard for the upcoming Culturama for activity and furthermore been involved heavily in service lately. I have attended around 4 Culturama training sessions (two as part of the stipulated Monday after school, two out of school – one for a light plot and one for an extra rehearsal) and I truly feel that I’ve exerted myself physically. It has been challenging learning to learn dancing, something that is not in my comfort zone, and through learning something new I feel that I have been achieving LO2. Furthermore, I have been very committed to the Culturama dancing, especially because of the learning barrier, and as such, I feel that I have been making progress in LO4. I have included the light plot video here (there are two India’s, our bit starts around 2:45).

Service initial reflection

For service, I will be joining my service from last year – 0WES. The service itself has changed in that there are certain new aspects to it, such as taking a much larger responsibility on campus as compared to last year. Furthermore, given that I am now in 11th grade, I plan on taking up a leadership role in the service; I hope this proves to be a valuable learning experience for me. I am excited to see where my experience with service goes this year, and hope that I will be making great strides in terms of service learning as a whole.

Activity initial reflection

For activity, I have joined Culturama. I feel that this would be a very interesting opportunity for me, both to learn more about my own culture and to also learn more about dance in general. Dancing is something I am very inexperienced with, and being a dancer in the upcoming Culturama festival in school is something I am somewhat apprehensive about, nevertheless something I am keen on undertaking in an effort to take up new things.

After finishing Culturama, I have decided to join Kahaani. I feel excited to once again do an Indian dance; this has in the past proven to be a very rewarding experience for me in terms of opening myself up to new activities that I would never have taken before. I feel that Kahaani will not only further my understanding of my own culture but also provide a further development to the dancing that I have been learning this past year. I am excited as this has in the past been a very enjoyable way of fulfilling my activity for CAS and look forward to fulfilling the last portion of activity for CAS like this.

Creativity initial reflection

For creativity, I plan to join the Humanities magazine and will be starting soon as a student coach in TedX. Both of these together will count for my creativity. I will be writing two articles (to be linked sometime in February when both are published) and will also be instrumental in leading up to the TedX conference.  I am looking forward to both, as I feel through one I will learn to express myself through ways aside from the dance that I have been doing in Culturama, but also I feel that TedX will further the leadership skills that I have gained from being the Vice-Chair of my service. Together, I am looking forward to creating two different pieces of creative work. Although both are radically different in presentation, both interestingly will be related to social issues; I hope that these two together are able to benefit my understanding of an individual in a world surrounded by alarming issues.

CAS Reflection #4

I feel that in the month of October, I have been making good progress in both creativity and service. For creativity, I have been involved in both the Humanities Magazine and organising the upcoming TEDx conference in January. For Humanities Magazine, I have been writing an article (will link in the CAS reflection I do once publish), through which I must research an issue pertinent to a particular humanities subject (Economics, History, Psychology etc.). I feel that through researching an issue on a global scale, I’ve made some progress in LO6 because I have had to not only do research into a global issue but truly understand it and understand the possible implications of the issue. As for TEDx, I feel that by working with my peers, I have been making progress in LO5. Although initially, it was quite difficult to work with people I did not know very well, I feel that I have overcome this barrier and as such have made progress in LO5. To make further progress in LO5, however, I feel that I could start taking more leadership roles in TEDx which would help me to work more effectively with peers.

Besides the humanities magazine and TEDx, I have also been taking a more active leadership role in my service. As mentioned earlier, by being the Vice-Chair of my service, I take up many more responsibilities in planning the activities and as such have been making more progress in LO3. Although my chair and I have been given a lot more freedom in planning the service, we would ideally want to be able to take a more assertive leadership role in the service for the months to come. As such, although progress has been made in LO3, there is still further progress to be made.

On that note, I feel that although progress is being made in CAS learning outcomes, there is still much more that I hope to achieve and eventually take away.

Culturama Final Reflection

It has been over a month since I have finished my Culturama, however, I have not had the chance to complete a reflection on the activity as a whole. Participating in Culturama opened up many opportunities for me, especially in personal development as an individual.
