When I first joined this service, it was unlike any other that I had heard of before. It compiled two very different aspects of my interests that I had never thought of together before. It combined my interest with music in helping those with dementia. Wanting to pursue a career in Medicine, I was curious about the practical implications that dementia can have and what it can do to the brain. Attempting to treat People With Dementia (PwD) with music is a form of therapy I had never thought of before and I was very interested to see this improvement in person. This service was no doubt difficult at first as I couldn’t fully connect with my resident and she was a rather angry and upset woman who didn’t like to talk so much. She would often complain and scream and at times it was difficult to find a song she liked. But, one day, after several attempts of finding a song she could remember, I finally found it! Suddenly, this angry and upset grandmother started singing along to this song, smiling and she even started telling me more and more about her family – her sons, daughters and husband. The music had helped calm her down to an extent of course and she would slip back into being angry but playing a certain selection of songs every day really did help.
