Project Week

Investigation

Our group has several shared interests, one of which is cycling. Furthermore, one of my goals before graduating is to complete a 100km cycle. Hence, we decided that one of our days for project week would be to complete a round island cycling. This would be a testament to our dedication and hard work to completing our goals. Furthermore, we wanted to have a sustained focus on the activity in CAS, hence we chose to also do another activity. After discussion and recommendations from peers, we chose to do a kayaking activity at an island in Singapore called Pulau Ubin. Furthermore, we focused on service and chose to continue our aquatic theme and complete a beach cleanup on one of Singapore’s most popular islands, Lazarus island.

Planning

In our planning stage, we assessed the feasibility of each of the activities. We chose to do this kayaking. We assessed and researched the company behind this activity and found it to be safe to work with. For cycling, we found that some members would not be able to complete the whole round island track, and hence from my own cycling experience, I designed a modified route using Singapore’s park connector network as shown below.

Furthermore, we decided that it was only safe for us to have someone with medical training and first aid experience, and hence in our group we elected a member to complete first aid training for our journies. In planning our beach cleanup, I had to contact several government authorities and jump through many logistical hoops to get clearance to complete this, improving my planning and organisational skills.

Action

While cycling, we found that our route was difficult for particular members of our group due the factors such as but not limited to fitness levels and bike quality. Hence, we had to further modify the route to the following.

Furthermore, one of our member’s bike wheels came off, hence we had to improvise and find ways to fix it without a proper repair kit. This required us to gather our skill and using these skills we managed to repair the bike and continue our journey.

Throughout our beach cleanup and kayaking we did not run across any major problems. The only difficulty we faced was rain during out kayaking session. Otherwise, I think that it went well, and that we felt quite accomplished completing and meeting goals and missions.

Reflection

During our project week, we enjoyed each other company and we were able to meet our goals. In particular, I was able to complete the 100km cycle I always wanted to, and now I have the courage to increase and try once again. In this way, I was able to extend my skills and challenge myself. Furthermore, I felt quite accomplished completing the beach cleanup, especially in the sunny sweaty weather that we experienced. We collected several bags of trash and we saw visible differences before and after our work on the beach. The kayaking activity however took a different tone. In this, we decided to be more relaxed and do kayaking. I somewhat regret this as I would like to have furthered my skills and challenged myself further.

Demonstration

To demonstrate the planning process, we created a document to collate all our evidence. Furthermore, we shared out story with the service to raise awareness with the amount of trash we saw using social media such as Instagram.

Kahaani Final

Once again, In 2023 I chose to dance in Kahaani, an annual dance performance. This year our theme was ‘Holi’, but through the other dances in the show I was able to learn more about the different festivals in India, across several religions, and about the major dates, such as independence and republic day.

Working with over 30 people in the dance has been quite challenging, especially juggling the workload of the IB while trying to make rehearsals. However, being able to teach my friends the dance when they may not know it has been quite beneficial for me and has improved my collaborative skills. Seeking help from friends in learning the dance has been beneficial and I have been able to puch myself to my limits with this performance.

Furthermore, the dance this year was far more physically involving as compared to last years, and hence I pushed myself to my limits with this years performance. Our dance lasted 6 minutes alone, compared to last years 3 minutes, and hence I have had to work a lot harder and put in more hours to practicing, often finishing with sore legs. Overall, this years kahaani performance has been wonderful and I enjoyed the last performance of my High School life.

Kahaani G12 Initial

I had performed in last year’s Kahaani performance, and feeling motivated by the work and effort that we put in last year, I decided to join again this year. Dancing in this showcase will raise money and awareness for the work that voice of world NGO in Kolkata does for their clients. One way that this showcase is doing this is by having several skilled singers and dancers coming from the NGO to perform and share their stories. I hope to express my creative side, which I rarely ever do, through the medium of dance. Dancing will allow me to engage in physical activity, increasing my flexibility. This year, my dance theme is ‘Holi’, the festival of colours in India. Our dance this year seems to be a lot more physically intensive compared to last year and hence, I look forward to growing further.

MUN Final

I have been participating in model United Nations for 3 years now, and I plan to continue in grade 12. This year, I was a part of the intermediate 2 training group and we practiced skills such as impromptu speaking and research on topics that we may not have heard of before. I believe that through this year, my skills in debate and public speaking improved greatly, especially through our conference UWCMUN. Juggling the work that comes along with the IB and managing time commitments has been tough, but the insight that I gain into global affairs from debating in MUN has always motivated me to persevere. Model UN has led me to understand global issues and affairs from various different perspectives, and has made me a more open minded person. Overall, this year has been quite productive, as I have improved my skills in  confidence, impromptu speaking and critical thinking. I hope to continue MUN next year and participate in more conferences.

Investment Club Final

This club has taught me techniques used in investing and has given me a taste of what a career in investment banking or private equity may look like. I have had limited experiences with investments in the past. So far we have learned concepts like:

  • Efficient frontier
  • Financial markets (money and capital markets)
  • Behavioural finance
  • Risk return trade-off
  • Market valuation
  • DCF calculations
  • Macroeconomic influences on financial markets

This year I was able to put my newfound skills to test through the UWC stock pitch competition. We pitched and attempted to convince the judges to invest in the stock Lockheed Martin. We explained why using the concepts as above. I believe that being taught such skills and being able to apply them to specific stocks like this is vital in helping me truly learn what these techniques are and why we do them. From the start of this activity, I have grown greatly and been able to explore new fields and touch upon new ideas. I may in the future use the skills that I learnt in the past year to invest my own money.

Kahaani G11 Final

Participating in kahaani exposed me to deeper aspects of my own culture, with songs and traditions from all across india. Furthermore, dancing in kahaani supports Kolkata GC (Voice of world NGO), an organisation that works to battle the education inequalities faced by many women and children in India. I am glad that I decided to perform this year as I not only played a small part in making a change, I furthered my own physical skill. Expressing my creativity through dancing is not something I do often, and it has been years since I was in any form of dance showcase. Hence practicing for hours on end for Kahaani has made me more flexible physically, and has made my moves more elegant, and less stiff.

Activities Executive – Final Reflection

Throughout last year I thoroughly enjoyed activities executive. I enjoyed working mainly within my team to maintain and update our instagram page and working with the service exec. My planning skills greatly improved with this activity compared to last year as we had to organise photography teams every week to shoot photos of various activities and events on campus. Furthermore, we coordinated meetings with service exec to streamline the two leadership organisastions further. Being a part of Activities Executive for year has allowed me to commit to this activity and support the ‘behind the scenes’ of the school, and promote new and smaller activities. The fulfilment from being able to help these small activities is what motivated me throughout the year to continue working hard.  Through an appreciation video and collage involving student names, activities executive managed to initiate events and further build our school spirit on campus.

The Handmaid’s Tale – Chapter 13

  • use of polysyndetic lists – “each murmur of slight pain, ripples of sloughed off matter, swellings and diminishing of tissue, the drooling of flesh”- she uses the list to show that she is hyper-attuned to everything happening in her body – this is because the body has become the central focus of her body “central object”
  • “moon, gigantic, round, heavy, an omen,”
