Stepping into Dance Showcase 2020

Dance Showcase is a dance performance choreographed by students reflecting a range of different genres and eras throughout the age of film. It will display the work of students’ ongoing activities as well as new student-led work. As the workload for IB  gets heavier, concerns of adding yet another dish to my already full plate may serve to be a challenge. Luckily, the schedules for most dances occur during lunch breaks so as to avoid conflicts with other activities and services.

Following the success of Culturama, I decided to audition for not one, not two, but three dances! It took a lot of courage to muster putting myself out there and displaying the confidence necessary. Out of the three, I only got into Singin’ in the Rain which was set in the 1920s. I had never attempted dancing tap or jazz before but it’s certainly something to look forward to along with meeting more new people. I hope this year’s production will be as, if not more successful than the previous year’s.

According to our choreographers: It’s about the protagonist’s journey to fame while meeting people whom he cannot work well with – however, he ends up falling in love. Our dance relates to the joy that comes with falling in love, especially in the second half of our dance. With our first half of the dance, it is a lot slower, where we aim to express calmness and content – rain is often associated with sadness, however, we intend to express content. In the second half, our dance focuses on expressing joy and the refreshment we feel when we wake up in the morning.
