Culturama 2019 Initial Reflection

CultuRama is a portmanteau of the words “Culture” and “Panorama”, showcasing choreography from various countries in the world, melding traditional with contemporary styles. It is an opportunity to learn about other nation’s cultures through dance and interact with other grade levels. I auditioned for Greece and Indonesia respectively, I got accepted into Greece. The dance that this group was featuring was Sirtaki, a folk dance usually done in wedding ceremonies. It has a mixture of slow and fast rhythms, with hands-on neighbors’ shoulders whilst in a line or circle formation.

The most obvious challenge to face would be my lack of dance experience. In school productions, I would prefer working backstage or on props, out of the spotlight. This is my moment to build my confidence.  I am also unfamiliar with this style of dance, however, I have faith that my dance leaders would be patient in relaying the movements of the dance to us.

I am looking forward to meeting people from other grade levels and seeing just how much I am able to do. This is a very novel experience for me and I anticipate good memories to come out of it.
