This reflection describes my initial thoughts of PPIS service during the first few weeks of participating. In our first and second week we took a trip to their school, which is a small local school for government-supported families. Since I have been participating in service since Grade 4 at UWC, one of the most important things I have learnt along the way is to ask questions and respond so our contributions efforts can be maximised for us and our service partner. We felt that it was extremely important to listen to the teachers at the care centre and see which activities we could do with the kids when they came to UWC. Using this, I offered to interview and take notes and rotate between different teachers to make a list of potential activities and concerns/tips for dealing with young children to help our sessions run smoothly. These notes were shared with the rest of the group so we could all have a good understanding prior to our first session at UWC. After, we discussed any other activities and also slightly changed ones to adapt to our available materials. I think that using our information as well as my peers’ experiences with younger siblings, we felt it gave us a steady foundation to make sure our first and following sessions go smoothly.
