Student Voice Reflection #1

As a Student Voice member, we contribute to hosting grade-wide events such as assemblies, outings, addressing mentor or grade concerns. As a representative for my mentor, the collaboration with other representatives is essential to working towards actions that try to benefit the entire grade, but at the same time be aware and conscious of any differing opinions. For example, the grade outing at the beginning of the year to a water park caused some concern around who would go, body image issues, and we had to come up with options that would satisfy everyone to some extent. Other responsibilities around addressing mentor or grade concerns are important as sometimes the problems within the grade may not be clear to teachers if no one explicitly tells the staff. For me, Student Voice is important for bridging the gap between student and staff by giving representatives the opportunity to feel comfortable to speak up and consider all opinions regarding choices and actions the grade may take.
