During the writing of my EE I shifted my focus, as I came upon a realisation that my initial topic was too broad and as such I wouldn’t have been able to achieve the necessary depth. After I focused on just the material properties and their life cycles I think my essay was a lot more focused and coherent. Although acquiring primary data was tedious and lengthy, it was well worth it, as there was no information online about heat and drop testing for these products. The difficulty was finding some relevant information related to this topic, hence why some parts of the essay were based solely on my personal experiences. I also didn’t have access to more sophisticated testing equipment, which would have enabled me to collect more accurate data. I would advise other students who undertake EE in Design Technology to have a specific topic from the very start. Analysing every aspect of the product is too broad, and comparison would simply take too much words, beyond the allowed limit. A focused approach makes structure easier, and the investigation becomes more difficult and more meaningful.
