Service this year has been quite a different experience than from previous years, largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Currently, I am a part of the ‘Fine Motor Skills and Lunch with Sun-Dac’, local service. This service, under normal conditions would have involved working with our service partner, Sun-Dac, and hosting lunch and games at our school. Sun-Dac helps those with intellectual disabilities and our role was going to be to aid them in interacting with their clients.

However, due to the pandemic, we were unable to meet our clients in person. Instead, we learnt a lot about them, and tried our best to educate ourselves about attitudes towards those with intellectual disabilities in Singapore. It was a very eye opening experience and I really learnt a lot about those with intellectual disabilities.

I think that the most important thing during this time is to find a way to connect with those we want to support, which I think we did, by sending our clients short video messages introducing ourselves and our interests. Also, learning about what an intellectual disability is really helped us create those videos as it meant we were able to pin point what our clients would have liked to see.
