First Reflection on all CAS activities [Season 1 and 2 CAS choices]

As the year begins, there are choices to be made. As we settle in to our subjects, we begin to see what we find intriguing and what we don’t. But beyond the subjects, there is more room to grown our character and skills. These are our activities.

This year, we are required to participate in activities that involve physical activity, creativity and service. This reflection outlines the investigation stage into my CAS activities.

Here are the choices I made;

Below, I will explain my choices

Culturama (ACTIVITY)

Last year was the first time I had heard of Culturama, the multicultural dance performance and I remember being too nervous to sign up, due to doubting my dancing skills. However, I witnessed many friends put effort and time into their practices, and when seeing the show, I was blown away.

This year, I decided to shift my mindset, and push myself out my comfort zone. I have never been confident in dancing, and never took action in changing this. However, with a little motivation, I decided to sign up for 3 dances and audition.

My aims for this season is not only to push myself physically but also mentally, as I am affronting something I have always found challenging. I want to grow as a person, and have this involvement personally prove to me that keeping an open mindset can lead to new passions and opportunities. I hope to gain some experience in dancing, and possibly lead me to joining the Kahaani dance show as well.

Equality Focus Group (SERVICE)

In our Grade 10 Global Perspectives class, we had to complete a Critial Challenge project, and I chose my focus to be on LGBTQ+ in Singapore. Because of this extended research task, I gained more exposure to the existing issue and decided to take action on it this year by joining the Equality Focus Group, which aims to raise awareness of the issues in our school.

Because I have a passion in this area, I want to learn more and create a positive change in my community.

Aerial Silks (ACTIVITY)

I decided to dedicate myself to this activity, because I have been part of it since the 6th grade. Since that time, I have dramatically increased my skill level, and found an area of sports that challenges me while also relieving stress, and meeting many talented people along the way, who I could also learn from.

However, this year, our original coach will no longer be teaching us, so I forsee it will be a challenge to adapt to the new teaching styles of a different teacher.

However, because I have a strong connection to the activity, I will shape myself to learn differently, and open up to the opportunity to learning original tricks and skills.

Medical Society

I took part in Medical Society last year, and came back this year because I really enjoyed discovering aspects of the medical field and Medical schools, especially as I am interested in studying Medicine in university.

While this activity does not meet the requirements for CAS, it is still an activity that I plan to dedicate myself to. I believe that being a student led activity, it gives me a lot of opportunities to grow, as well and learn from other students.

This year, I hope to run for chair of the activity, which with provide me with even more occasions for leadership. This will also push me out of my comfort zone and assume a new type of role in an activity.

Painting (CREATIVITY)

I chose painting because I find it to be a very calming activity, which also requires a lot of attention and skill, which can be developed over time. I have done painting as an activity before and found it to be very beneficial as a break from work and academic stress, but also results in original pieces, which I am very proud of due to all the dedication I put into them.

This season, I plan to paint a swan in water. I have attempted to paint water before, but I want to develop this difficult element and make it more realistic and dynamic.

Yoga Therapy with Tampines Minds (SERVICE)

The last activity I signed up for this season was Tampines Minds. In this activity, we work with people who have intellectual disability, and help them do a form of physical activity, in this case Yoga. I believe this activity will be incredibly beneficial to me because I want to expose myself to the experience of patient care, as I want to follow a medical path.

I have never done such an experience and I was quite excited to sign up, because I really like getting to know people who live life in a different situation to me. I also find that helping people and bringing a smile to their face is the best thing I can do.
