Muay Thai 2019-2020

The reason why I picked the same activity I had the last year is because I feel that Muay Thai and Boxing is one of the most ‘nourishing” activities that this school has. This sport is based on discipline and hard work. I feel that this activity helped me develop a different way of thinking and also to understand that many things related to the IB and the studies are based on hard work.

Also, I spent a good time with my friends that were joining different season in the activity. I could have a great time using my previous knowledge to help them performing different moves. We all spent a great time together and learning martial arts in this activity. Although I could not manage to attend many of the classes due to loads of work I had this year, the sessions I attended were meaningful and helped me release stress doing this amazing sport.

Many thanks to the teachers and all the knowledge they shared with me. Muay Thai is definitely one of the most important things I pick from this whole experience and I hope I will continue doing this for a long time in my life.

ITP Piano 2019 – 2020

Having the opportunity to learn how to play the piano and to play it very often was considered something I could not do daily when I was back home. However, this time having a teacher that would help improve my skills and to help me develop the stage of my life where I see music as one of the few most important things in my life once again. I am very thankful for having this opportunity and of having a great teacher that even though I feel I am slowly learning new songs. I never played the piano like that before and that is one of the most important achievements of CAS from my experience in the school.

The progress in the class is being great. I have presented new pieces to play and practised them. I could not manage to fulfil all the goals I had at the beginning but the outcome that I already have from ITP is very significant. This will definitely make me join more activities related to music and piano and also will make me continue my journey in the world of music. Thanks to my teacher and all the time spent having fun and playing some good music in class.

Cuban salsa 2019-2020

Once again I joined the Cuban salsa dance group to perform in the 2020 edition of Showcase. the show is soon to take place in the school and it is already being exciting. One of the best things that we could see in this activity is the commitment of those who stayed. Like the last year, many people joined at the beginning, however not many stayed until the end, maybe because of interest or maybe because they were not feeling confident enough or liked something else. this year we are way less than the year before but we have capable people and willing to do a great performance. the fact that I see people from the last year showcase in our team is what makes me feel proud of it. It shows how people are having a compromise with the teachers and the activity. I hope this year goes well and we have a great time on stage. I also hope that now that I am leaving, many new people join and keep this activity alive and performing well.

Chess Championship 2019

Being part of a Chess tournament in which I participated in a team representing the school was one of the most significant experiences I had in my time doing the IB in UWC. It was very impactful because only as a team we could reach our goal and end up in the first place in the tournament for our category. Even though we did not manage to win every single game, the four of us could manage to cheer each other up in order to have better results in our following games. The results in the tournament are clearly a product of working collaboratively and perseverance. At the end of the tournament, we had different scores that summed differently to our team final score and helped us score a gold medal. However, it did not make any difference between us and no feelings of being better. we celebrated our achievement together. I am very thankful with the school and the activities office because of giving me this opportunity and also because I had a great time playing chess with my team and discussing many things related to the game. It was very interesting.

Reflection 2 (RC2)

The essay writing process became easier once I could manage to narrow the main topic and also the clear separation of the sections and their relation with the main topic. Now that I have the work ongoing, it will be so much easier to refine each section and to notice what sections are going to be more important and therefore impactful in the topic. Now that I have separated the sections more distinctly, I need to find new sources that will help me get even narrower and accurate with the topic. I am looking forward to presenting a solid Extended Essay and to hear from my supervisor to make changes and refine it. Once the work is set in a good path, it is so much easier to develop each part of the essay.

Final Reflection (R3)

After finishing the Extended Essay with all the details I had to complete for its final submission, I hoped that it was going to be good for the area I have chosen. At first, I was afraid that it would not reach the expectations of the subject and did not think it would be a good essay. However, after listening to the final feedback I understood what I had to do and worked hard to reach the objectives. At my last interview with my supervisor, the essay reached expectations and had a good opinion from my supervisor. The experience of writing the extended essay is going to help me in the future in terms of writing formal texts for the university and the way to find information and synthesize it to reach a good understanding of the topic not only for me but for the readers too.

Transition Carousel

The last sessions about our transition to university were quite interesting in many ways. I did not expect to have sessions about the problems and situations that the new students have to face on their transition from high school to university. For me, it was an individual issue that every single one of us has to handle, somehow.  The sessions were interesting because the teachers in charge of every session explained possible scenarios where we could be on trouble and how to avoid them giving examples of their own experience and giving us a more realistic situation.  The session about self-defence was useful because it placed us in a very common situation in places like the university and all the parties that come behind it.  The session about the pics was useful because it involved our privacy and our safety in terms of social media. In my opinion, the best session was the last one about alcohol and parties. I think it gave us many facts and situations where we should react differently and with caution.

After all, the sessions were better than I expected and they were quite useful. I feel I will use them in my future situations.

Positivity Reflection

I fell I am happy when I do what I want. That does not mean that I can do whatever I want every time I want. Therefore, I am not always happy. I use to think that before, the same concept of my own happiness. However, I have not experienced my freedom like during my time here, far from home. During my time here I could do more things on my own and freely. It started to be like this back home, but a jump to Asia brought me new concepts and a different type of view from my new environment. It is true that it was stressful too, but I would not change anything from my experiences in this part of my life.

Project Week

As a group with a purpose, we went to Jakarta to leave traces of our commitment and our desires to help the kids getting a better future in education in the community in Jakarta. After our main purpose, we went to know more about the city and explore some zones in South Jakarta.

During the first two days, we spend our time learning about the place and the culture. We went to a national park called Taman Mini. This plays offer an exhibition of the culture and its mixture for many years in Indonesia. We could also appreciate the fauna of Indonesia in the same park. Visiting the museum we could also appreciate the architecture of the cultures and how it changes depending on the place and ethnicity.

After our time exploring the city of Jakarta, our first day received us. The first time in direct contact with the community of trash pickers shocked us a bit. We realise that the children were living in those conditions since they were born. In addition, we realise the situation fo their parents in that community and we could not blame them for their misfortune. When we were welcomed by the children and their teachers, the smile in their faces and their happiness while we were doing our activity together was more than enough to fill our minds with happiness and realise that our impact in their community was becoming true. We helped them in many ways, we taught them (even when most of us could not speak their language, we figured out how to do). After teaching and playing games with the children, and building carts to pick up trash using hammer and nails, we went to the XS Project main office to check what was going up there. We could see many products that the people from this community were working on. Honestly, that job is amazing and requires lots of patience and creativity.

Those days in Jakarta, doing amazing service are going to be really significant for my experience as a member of a community like UWC, this experience helped me to understand how hard is the situation for many and how to contribute to the change.

EE Initial Reflection

The time spent planning and writing my first part of the Extended Essay was interesting and also hard. I started doing my research on historical websites and books. It is true that the topic I have chosen is mostly historical but centred on the development of this language (English). Even though I got plenty of information, I could choose the topics that I found more relevant towards this topic. That helped me to shape a structure for my essay. After separating the topic in the different historical moments when English became developed and influenced finding information to complete the sections is even easier and seems like the work is going to be simple from now on. I believe that the topic will become clearer as I narrow it to the main topic and add some examples to make it clear for the reader. This work could not be done without the help of my supervisor of course.
