Mr. Hands Task

The description of Mr hands and his home:

  • As Norma had entered the house through the front door, she already sees frosted glass and no light coming into the house. The door had been opened by a woman who is said to look like she had “thin, frizzy hair and cheeks that looked as if they had been slapped forty times.” As Norma asked a question, the woman gave a “strained” look towards Norma, and had bluntly said “just go straight up.” Just from this the sense of being welcomed is denied for Norma, and she already seems to be flustered and unaware of the outcome of the visit. She had also mentioned she was “welcomed by the smell of old dinner and the sound of a television set.” As she walked to the home, she looked down at the carpet which was a “disgrace” with “stains” and “footmarks,” with “dirty and dingy all over.” These are all pieces of evidence from pages 209-211

Normas narrative voice & the use of irony:

  • On page 212, Norma’s voice and tone in the beginning shows she asks rhetorical questions such as “Had he put on weight since I had seen him? In ten days? Oh I was being absurd! Men will always seek out the stodgy food their systems seem to crave.” She makes up excuses to hide the fact that Mr. Hands already seems like a peculiar person. On the same page, Norma says “It was hard to see exactly what he had got ready. The room was small and overcrowded with clutter. Seedy, down at the heel, dilapidated – these were the only suitable adjectives that sprang to mind.” It had been a small amount of time for her to realise slowly that it isn’t seeming to be the picture perfect studio she was hoping for. On page 13, she also says “There was much to take in.” With all the different things coming to her head about the studio (home), or the furniture inside it, she is still sensing some sort of awkward tension in the air.
