Swimming with Hougang – End of Season 4 Reflection

LO4 – Commitment, showing perseverance, resilience

This season of service has been a difficult one; due to COVID-19 restricting our contact with the members that we work with. We have had to come up with new ways in which we can benefit the members of the Hougang centre. We have done this by focusing on creating resources for next year’s grade 11s to use (such as a video with tips for them) to help them get the most out of their experience. This is important so that they are able to get straight into the service and start off with lots of ideas. It can also be used when they have problems throughout the year; they can come back to this video and see if we have any answers to their questions.

Another thing that we did is we sent over cards to the members to continue our contact with them and to show them that we are thinking of them. We wanted to find a way to indirectly communicate and interact with the members during the 1 hour service time. The members received our cards and we were told that they really enjoyed getting the cards and to know that we were thinking of them.

Once we started home-based learning, we decided that we were only going to meet once a fortnight. Due to the lack of direct interaction and service that we could do, it was clear that there was no need to meet every week. During the time between sessions, we wrote reflections and posts for our blog. Although being stuck at home created many challenges for us, it provided us with a lot of time to reflect and discuss our year doing this service.
