TOK: 3 knowledge claims (History)

Task: 3 knowledge claims related to the knowledge framework and could be supported by examples from this lesson. (History)

One knowledge claim for history can be our understanding and trust in past events, whether they happened or not. This can be validated by having overlapping information and agreement between a group of people. Since often in history, there is no definite proof of an event really happening that we have seen with our own eyes, as it can be impossible. So, if historians come to an agreement that an event likely took place, evidence of the event is found and they share similar or the same belief, it would be reasonable to claim a particular event did occur.

Another knowledge claim for history may be the record of past events allow us to adapt and improve. Meaning that keeping a record of past events helps us clearly remember what happened in the past. We are also able to see the results of events and actions, the validity of old records, however, may or may not be strong. An example could be the decline in war through different groups of people. Although war still occurs, there has been a large decline as people have adapted and changed their ideas of a solution.

A third knowledge claim may be that history can allow us to better understand the reasoning for past events and why we live in the society that we do today. Similar to the point above, history has given us insight into the mistakes that we have made in the past. However, it does not just allow us to learn from our mistakes, but allow us to understand the process and development of the society that we live in today.
