When it comes to my music taste, I wouldn’t be able to define it as one thing or the other. I like to think that my taste encompasses a mix of pop, classical music, EDM, but also more laid back tunes. Most of the time, what I listen to depends on my mood so I turn to certain playlists in accordance with what I’m feeling. One song that I’ve been listening to on repeat lately is ‘Outrunning Karma’ by Alec Benjamin. I see it as more of a relaxing tune and is quite therapeutic to get me through the quarantine period. In particular, I like the chord progressions throughout, and the lyrics themselves are actually interesting to listen to – almost like hearing a story through poetry. In general, I tend to like song lyrics that are ambiguous and that you have to listen to multiple times to generate meaning from. This is why I think this is a good example of a song; both the musical and lyrical content is interesting to listen to, and really makes you feel a certain vibe each time. If I had to describe it, I would label it intense, thoughtful, but at times uplifting. In terms of the 25-year-old artist (Alec Benjamin), he’s only recently come into the light, and also produces many other good/expressive songs.
This is a snippet from the chorus:
“He’s never gonna make it, all the
Poor people he’s forsaken, karma
Is always gonna chase him for his lies
It’s just a game of waiting from the
Church steeple down to Satan karma
There’s really no escape until he dies”
I’m listening to Outrunning Karma as I type this. It’s gorgeous. I can see why you like it so much. Why have I only heard of him now? Love the lyrics, as you’ve said. Thanks for introducing me to this new artist (well, new for me, anyway). Which other tracks would you recommend?
