Cognitive Rehabilitation CAS Reflection 1 (#LO6)

On Monday the 13th I had my first weekly session of service, in which I am doing ‘Cognitive Rehabilitation’ with Apex Harmony Lodge. This local service revolves around supporting the elderly in Singapore who have dementia, through helping them carry out every day tasks and improving their wellbeing. Many of these people no longer have familial contacts or strong support system, so providing structure to their daily lives is the primary goal of Apex Harmony Lodge and our partnership with them. As today was just an introductory session, we learned important details and watched informatory videos on the issue of dementia worldwide, and how it effects people severely. Previously, I thought dementia was restricted mainly to memories, but now I understand that not even knowing the simple chronological order of events in one’s day is what takes such a great toll on individuals. After becoming a bit more informed about our work, I am eager to move forward with this service and investigate ways of helping, even if online.
