Service LO7

When working with new people and a new service group it is always important to be respectful and consider the ethics of choices and actions. This was demonstrated in my service which was SunDac. This was a new service group to me so I had to work hard to get to know the people I would be working with from the group as they came to visit our school every week to do our activities. Considering the ethics of my choices and actions was really important in order to be respectful and welcoming to the new people I was working with.

Project week LO7

Considering the ethics of our choices and actions was something that we had to do whilst on project week in the Philippines when we went whale shark diving as part of the activity section of the trip. We were strictly not allowed to touch the whale sharks as this was something that the local people believed in and due to the safety of the animals. We had to respect the country we were in and the people that were there with us. It is always important to respect other people’s culture and beliefs especially when you are in a situation where you are working with them and they are helping you and that was the situation with us and the whale sharks in Cebu.

Project week LO6

Demonstrating engagement with issues of global significance is something that we did as a group on project week when we spent time doing service at the after school program that we were working with in Cebu City. We were using our knowledge and education and passing it on to the children in Cebu and it was something that I will remember for a long time as it was such a rewarding experience. To be able to educate other students on a topic that they are interested in really made our trip and especially the service aspect of the trip so successful and engaging for both us and the kids that were there.

Rugby LO5

Collaboration was a skill that was shown by our rugby team in grade 11. We had to work together in trainings and in games in order to get the result that we all wanted. This was shown in all training sessions and all games and ultimately paid off when we won SEASAC at the end of the year. Without collaboration it would have been almost impossible to work together and achieve a common goal. Especially for rugby or any team sport where the game relies on everyone to do their job while working together as a team. This is definitely what made us so successful.

Project week LO5

Project week is definitely the main experience to talk about when discussing collaboration because that is the skill that our group relied on most in order to make our trip successful. Whether it was in the planning and researching stages of the trip or being on the trip in Cebu, collaboration was something that was needed and achieved by our group. Project week was a really successful trip and experience because of the way that we worked together and made sure everyone was doing their job. This is definitely an important skill to have in any group work or any trip.

Service LO4

Showing commitment and perseverance to an aspect of CAS was shown in my service which is SunDac. This happened every week when our service group came to visit the school and we would do activities and have lunch with them. I was committed to the service every week and showed perseverance in times that were difficult or unfamiliar to me. This was also a time where I was able to learn new things about myself and the people I was working with as this service was all new to me. This is something that I really enjoyed doing for CAS as it challenged me but persevere and it was worth it in the end.

Project Week LO3

Planning project week is a good example of where I had to work with others in order to plan a CAS activity, in this case a service and activity aspect of CAS. I was in a group of 6 with some of my closest friends so working together wasn’t going to be a problem however it was important to distribute the work evenly to make sure everyone had a role so we could effectively plan our trip. This is something that we did very well and everyone got the chance to plan a part of the trip which made the process a lot easier for us as a group.

Rugby LO1

At the beginning of the rugby season in grade 12 it was easy for me to identify my own strengths and areas for improvement and areas for personal growth. After coming off the grade 11 SEASAC win our team was at a high that we had to intention of carrying into the new season. I had identified my strengths and had been working on areas for personal growth, for example I had switched positions to play on the wing to accommodate for the change of players as we had lost some grade 12s at the end of last year. This was something that I will continue to work on into the season and we will continue to work as a team to hopefully achieve the same result as last year with a win at SEASAC.

Pottery LO1

At the beginning of pottery it was easy to see that I had limited skills and understanding of pottery however I took this as a challenge to overcome in my 2 seasons of pottery in grade 11. I was able to learn new skills and make new friends while doing something that was unfamiliar to me and some of the people I was working with. It was a safe space to learn and I think that I took full advantage of that and made the most of my time in pottery. After completing the 2 seasons, I can say that I have learned a lot and have gained a lot of experience and new skills in this area of CAS.

R3 Final EE Reflection

One challenge that I encountered throughout the extended essay process was collecting enough relevant information about the recycling program in Singapore which made it hard to write about this in the essay. A possible solution to this may have been to set up a meeting with someone that works for the NEA and try to get as much information as I could in a face to face meeting. This experience was a valuable learning experience because I was able to learn a lot more about the waste management program in Singapore and how efficient it was when compared to other countries, this was especially valuable because it is a topic that interests me. As for my research sources used, these were very reliable and allowed me to access as much information as I could, especially the NEA website run by the Singapore government. If I were to do this essay again I wouldn’t change much apart from possibly including an NEA interview and maybe changing the way I conducted the public interviews to something that was more effective such as an online survey because this was a very time consuming part of this process.
