EE Reflection
My essay is about the monetization of Bilibili. Bilibili is a videos sharing website themed around ACG, which means animations, comics and games. It is a place where users can submit, view, and add commentary subtitles (danmu) on videos. As a ‘conscientious’ video platform, Bilibili publicized that it had been in the situation of loss without return for several years, ignore whether this is true or not, the result is after it posted a screenshot of the loss figures, it is deeply loved by Chinese users and affectionately known as ‘the B site’ by netizens. However, in order to Successfully listed in the US, starting in 2017, Bilibili began to be commercialized.
First, I explained what do we mean by “monetise”, so monetization is charging fees for something that used to be free or attempting to make money on goods or services that were previously unprofitable or had been considered to have the potential to earn profits. In addition, I used YouTube as an example. Then, I talked about ways Bilibili used to hold customer, its membership system and management of the website. After that, I explained several ways of Bilibili’s monetizing: games combined transport, internet currency, animation purchase, advertisement system, ways to participate in and organize the comic-con and celebrations to increase users’ sense of belonging. Then, I made an argument about market saturation. I did a conclusion at the end.
In fact, I am not very satisfied with this essay. In this paper, I explained in detail what monetization is and how to monetize, but I did not have the support of evidence, such as data, only a few famous quotes, but without indicating the source. As one of the users of this website, before writing the article, I thought “there is no conspiracy, this website is very conscientious and reliable, not commercial at all”. However, after doing research and investigation, I learned objective facts. In the next paper, I will think more objectively and comment without personal feelings. I will be more accurate and use more event, data and expert perspectives as evidence to support my opinion. Be more comprehensive, more logical.
