The Typing Rebellion Reflections

Reflection 1

Before I came to UWC, my old school prohibited students from carrying any electronic products, including mobile phones and laptops. Therefore, I did not get used to working with a laptop. I typed relatively slower than my friends, and this was not good especially when I had essay to write. Thus, I decided to practice my typing skills, and this is why I joined this club. My goal is to type quickly without looking at the keyboard.

Reflection 2

With constant practice, I find that my typing speed gets faster. However, challenges remain. The club’s practice is to use a website that teaches users how to type different letters in a “go through” mode. To make the practice interesting, there are typing games in the website. Therefore, it is easy and fun to learn. Although I practiced typing words in my daily study so I do not have big problems in the position of letters. However, I am not familiar with the position of punctuation marks, such as “;” “:”, so I often type the wrong marks. I need to practice more on that.

Reflection 3

Typing is like rowing upstream; not to advance is to fall back. If I do not practice for a period of time, the muscle memory of my fingers will become shallow, gradually will be rusty to typing. Similarly, learning is the same, we need to review and consolidate to prevent the knowledge of the rusty. On the contrary, if we continue to consolidate our skills, the knowledge will be deeply engraved in the mind.

TOK Presentation Reflection

In my presentation, there is still some to improve:

Problem 1: I spent 3 minutes explaining about my real-life example, which is too long and detailed.

Solution 1: Real-life example does not need to be interpreted comprehensively, so less than 2 minutes could be spent on it.

Problem 2: Knowledge concepts were not used thoroughly, some are mentioned but not applied and explained in the presentation.

Solution 2: I should analyze my research question and fully understand the knowledge concepts to be able to explain my claims with them and make my claim more clear.

Problem 3: My counterclaim 1 is not argumentive to claim 1.

Solution 3: More knowledge concepts can make the claim stronger.

Problem 4: More perspectives from different angles should be looked at, or the claim would be too vague and not persuasive.

Problem 4: More research is needed, talked to the supervisor for suggestions can make my thinking more clear.

Problem 5: TOK concepts is the main focus of the presentation but not a real-life example.

Solution 5: Use the knowledge framework and explain knowledge concepts deeper and more thoroughly, do not be distracted by real-life examples.

Conclusion: My interpretation of the knowledge concepts was not detailed enough to show my understanding of them. The structure was not quite fit standard and better planning is needed. More perspectives are needed, I need to extend my understanding and further discussion to dig the knowledge claims deeper. I actually spent a relatively long time making connections between concepts, but I realized that I need more preparation and research: make the knowledge claims first and find TOK concepts to fit in. Always remember to focus on knowledge but not examples.

PSE G11 Reflection

Challenges from Grade 11:

  1. New subjects
  2. New people
  3. New learning system
  4. New activities and services
  5. New hobbies šŸ˜€

How did I tackle challenges successfully:

Subject: The most of the subjects I chose for IB were new to me, but they are what I’m interested in, so it made things easier. Through firsthand experience, I can conclude that people do learn better and faster when they are interested in something.

What were out of my control:

Not much. The COVID-19 circuit breaker tested my self-discipline.

What we learned in PSE is relevant:

The session of “I BE” led us to know more about ourselves and taught us to be confident. This session is helpful because with a better understanding of myself, I knew what was my weakness and what should I do to improve. The session of “relationship” helps me with the challenge “New people”, because it demonstrated the importance of healthy relationship.

Challenges might appear in Grade 12:

  1. Pressure from academic
  2. Heavy schoolwork
  3. Pressure from parents
  4. others

What can I do to overcome?

  1. Read some books, play some games, have some fun… try my best to relax.
  2. I can do a better time management in face of heavy schoolwork.
  3. Talk to the parents/friends.
  4. Others

What can PSE help:

We learned about the way of managing our time during PSE lesson, and we also learned about how to communicate with adults or people who can offer help.

Make a plan:

  1. Pay attention to each lesson and schoolwork.
  2. Sleep: at least 7 hours each day.
  3. Ask for help if necessary.
  4. Try my best.

TOK G11 Reflection

TOK Grade 11 Year in Reflection

  1. What DONā€™T you get?

After a year of leaning TOK, I still feel a bit confused about the concept of ā€œreasoningā€ because I think inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning both can be unreliable. No matter the result is reasoned from a theory or a common phenomenon, people can always be influenced by their confirmation bias: looking for information that fits their previous understandings.

  1. What DO you get?

I learned many about how to write an essay that always focuses on the topic. Through writing the practice TOK essay, I learned not to stray from the subject. I had many ideas when I was writing the essay, but I realized I couldn’t apply them all, because most of them didn’t fit the topic perfectly. Once I put irrelevant information, the essay seems less precise and academic.

  1. What has stood out for you?

I am patient and decisive. When preparing for my TOK presentation, after more than 5 hours of research on the first knowledge question, it took me 5 minutes to make up my mind to change my knowledge question. Although a little impetuous, I adhere to accomplish the preparation of the new question in a clam and disciplined manner.

  1. Has TOK changed your thinking at all this year?

TOK made me think deeper with a skeptical mind. Reading new information, I no longer easily believe but think about the credibility of the news with a more skeptical attitude, and I often tried to find a link between two concepts. For example, when I watch TV show, I not only enjoyed the show but also thought about why people don’t hate the bad in the visual world, is there anything to do with the relationship between ethical guideline and perception. When I read news reports about people’s reactions to COVID-19, I skeptically wondered if the spread of 5G has something to do with distrust of authority, because distrust of authoritative information leads people to be more favorable to folk rumors.Ā

  1. Has TOK ruined your thinking at all this year?

This subject made me get used to thinking and doubting with more rigorous thinking. This causes me to struggle with logic problems when reading some fantasy novels. I can’t help but think about the importance of equivalence conversion and struggle with the plot of “creating water by magic” because “channeling water” is more reasonable.Ā

  1. What do you aim to achieve next year?

I would like to do better in analyze knowledge concepts. I will pay attention to each lesson and trying to absorb more useful methods of thinking. I hope I can carry out a skeptical mind of thinking ā€œwhat do I know and what do I think I know?ā€ Also, I hope that I can do well in TOK presentation and essay šŸ˜€

PROJECT WEEK

LO2Ā  Challenge

We planned to do circus and cooking during our project week, and cooking is a new skill for me. During the project week, we are going to visit Cambodia, and I have never been to this country before. All of this would be so interesting but also challenging. I am going to learn collaboration since we always work as a team so far in the planning section. I am glad and excited to meet new people and see novel things, so I am looking forward to this amazing trip.

LO3Ā  Initiative Planning & initiating activities

Since Cambodia is a new place for most of our group members, we have to be well prepared when we get there. We did a lot of planning, most of them are to ensure our safety. For example, we did a very detailed schedule of our whereabouts, very specific personal information, researches about the places we are going to travel…… The only problem is that we have limited time for a different phase of planning and sometimes there wasn’t enough time to finish stuff. However, we still got almost everything done on time because everyone in the team is very active and reliable.

Investigation
I used to study drama for a year and I became very fascinated with this subject. I like the feeling of being totally immersed in another world, to feel the emotions of the character, and experience another life. Drama is challenging, performers need to control facial expressions, voice, movements, and so on, and it is challenging to hold full control of body movements. Therefore, with enthusiasm for drama and excitement for challenges, I signed up for the audition and was qualified for the show. At that time, I was very glad to participate in this event and was well aware that I had to take my responsibility and do my best to make this show perfect.

Preparation
A complete drama production must be contributed by many people: director, props managers, costume designers, performers, and so on. I was double cast so I acted both Sarah Summers and Ensemble. As a performer, my responsibility is to carefully analyze my character, hone my dramatic skills, and maintain good attendance.

Action
During the six-month preparation process, I learned to collaborate and gained confidence in standing in front of people. It was hard to perform close relationships with people you donā€™t know, so I talked to people I worked with, and the problem was solved when we became familiar with each other. In the beginning, I was too nervous to perform well in front of many people. But over time, we practiced again and again, and I gradually overcome this problem. Even when I was facing a larger amount of audience in the actual performances, I was not overly nervous.

Reflection
This was my first attempt at a big acting event, and I was actually a little nervous. At first, I was worried that my mistakes would drag down the team. However, through the warm-up activities organized by Ms. Bye, I felt more adapted to the team and became more relaxed, so I was able to cooperate with others better. When I had questions about my role I would ask Ms. Bye so that I could play my role better. Also, I never miss rehearsals because I want to keep up with the team as best as I can. Through this series of preparation, I was more confident that I could perform at my best in the final performance.

At the end of each performance, everyone would leave the stage singing loudly. Every time to this moment, I will be particularly excited and emotion, and a sense of collective pride springs up. I had a great time!

Demonstration
This project really touched me, and changed some of my habits. In the drama production, I learned the importance of teamwork, which I had never truly realized. In the rehearsals, Ms Bye constantly emphasizedĀ that each actor, no matter what role, has its own meaning and story, and everyone is important in the team. Every action of us will be watched by the audience and may bring positive or negative influence to the whole team, so we need to take not only own responsibility but also the responsibility of the team. Which means that we need to care and help others while doing our job well.

In fact, I felt a strong sense of honor and pride that I had never experienced in an individual performance in the final curtain call, as I realized the significance of the team.

Lessons learnt from Colonel Petrov exercise

Our group chose to call the white house and ask them if they sent missiles, and we would send a full-scale strike back if the call didnā€™t work. It was clear that the call wonā€™t work: because of the intense cold war between the USSR and the USA, we won’t believe anything the person in charge said. So in fact, we chose B in disguise.

According to the article, we found a sentence that stated that it’s entirely possible for the USĀ  sending a missile to the USSR because it did so to other countries before. We knew that it also could be a computer error, and if we gave the wrong information to the high commander, we could actually start a war. The consequences would be millions of deaths which might include us. On the other hand, if the missile was really coming and we reported that there is nothing. Not only I would be executed for treason, but the country will also be weak in the coming war. We die, either way, so we chose to believe in the evidence that provides by the computer and history and sent a full-scale strike back. I think we made this decision because we didnā€™t use emotion; we didnā€™t consider the bigger picture of the future and empathize with people because we thought we end up bad anyway.

ā€œOn 26 September 1983, the nuclear early-warning system of the Soviet Union reported the launch of multiple USAF Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles from bases in the United States.ā€ however, Stanislav Petrov reported it as a computer error and it turned out that he is right. He used reasoning because he said that if the US really wants to attack the country, 5 missiles are not enough. He used knowledge about global politics, computer science, mathematics and so on. But the most important part of his decision-making process was his gut, his intuitive thinking.

Language is infectious so that people readily listen to you, but the words you said must be rational and reliable so that people can believe you. Language uses emotion to empathize with others, and reason uses evidence and facts to pursue others. These two are ways of learning, there are so different but both of them are necessary and complement each other. Without reason, the decision you made or the knowledge you have could be reckless or unreliable, because they are generated emotionally. On the other hand, without emotion, the fact can seem cold. For example, without the rendering of diction, the information about war would be a string of data, which doesnā€™t help people understand the main idea.

When I was listening to a speech, I might feel angry, happy and even sad with the speaker’s words. At this time, I relied on emotion to feel feelings and points the speaker wants to express to me. But I also looked for evidence that really supports the opinions of the speaker to ensure that everything he said is true and evidence sometimes hit a person hard. For example, ā€œthe earthquake killed 23 people, we need to know how to protect ourselves and prevent this tragedy from happening again.ā€

For Art prize, the participants have to have at least two years of visual art experience, it is a good idea but why 2 years?

For Music Prize, the group said that they will have a platform and hold a public vote, I think this is a very good idea, but the most of the top 20 probably win by pop music since most people who search for music on the Internet are young people. I think that the music creators can be required to tag their music, for example, pop, classic… Then, the platform manager can divide the music into different categories, and the voters will select 3 favorite songs in each category.

Lion Befrienders games and activities with the Elderly Reflection

The aging population problem in Singapore is getting serious, and there are many elderlies who stay at home alone. Our mission is to accompany them through playing games and chatting with them to make them feel warm. Therefore, I was very glad to take part in this service and help the elderly. My goal was to keep my commitment and participate in every session actively.

30 September 2019 #LO 3

In our first contact with the elderly this year, I found that the elderly were very friendly and active. We entered the recreation room and did self-introduction and then some chats. Then, we watched the presentation of one of the members of the organization in the living room. The presentation introduced the organization and talked about our missions. We didn’t have much time after watched the presentation, so we merely played one game with the elderly, it reminds me that we need better time management. The game called Chinese Chat, the first person thinks a sentence, then whispers it to the second person, and then works its way up to the last person and see if the meaning of the sentence is changed.

I think they had a good time because I could hear their laughter from time to time and see the happy expressions on their faces, it is pleasant. It was the first time to meet the elderly and I was a little at a loss, because I had no idea what to say, after I asked their names and the name of their hometown. This is what I didn’t do well, and I will think about topics before the next conversation. My goal is to build a good relationship with the elderly through this year and make them feel relaxed and secure.

Reflection #2

I actively participated in every session, because I think what I did was very meaningful. I would feel satisfied to see the smiling faces of the elderly. However, I was also thinking about the real needs of the elderly. I think the reason these old people need our help is because they are lonely. This loneliness can be mitigated by children being together. So I think, if we want to solve the problem fundamentally, we should train modern young people to attach importance to the mental health of the elderly. To help more and a wider range of people.
