CAS Project Reflection 3

CAS Project Reflection 3

  • Reflection – Reflect on the overall process so far, raise questions, ask

The overall project was extremely successful from my point of view. Though it’s yet to be fully edited and uploaded (which is planned for some point in 2022), I myself learned a lot from it. I was able to grasp many new camera skills and general film skills. I learned skills like lighting and camera angles from Tarush and Shaurya themselves, all of which ultimately led to a higher quality production. Like many self – led student projects, of course not everything went to plan. We had to constantly think on our feet – an example of this was the weather we faced throughout the filming process. We had to reschedule shoots due to weather, and ultimately had to plan our shoots around weather conditions. We also had to plan our shoots around the availability of all the actors involved in each scene – I developed a sense of communication in this aspect as well. Apart from these skills and all the acting skills I gathered, I especially enjoyed this project because at the end of the day, we all had fun whilst filming – it was an especially memorable experience which I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

Preparation- Planning the experiences

My lead role in the film only comes about in the second season. However, my role consisted of more than just an actor – I spent a lot of time working with the team on the first season as well. This ranged from being in charge of the camera work for certain shoots when Shaurya (the main cameraman) was not available, and helping with the sets at different locations – I found that all of this actually prepared me for my acting role which came later. Learning from Tarush and Shaurya was especially useful because they take film as an IB subject. By attending shoots and helping the team, I was able to gain insights into film and directing, which actually made the acting process proceed with ease when it came down to season 2 where I played a larger role. The real preparation for my role started with online discussions between myself and the directors, as they started to fill me in with their vision of the character that I was playing. Given that the film reflected (to an extent) real life and the musical journey of Tarush and I, I think it was essential for me to not only learn about the director’s vision of my character, but also for me to share my views on the character. We actually met together at east coast park to go through the scripting prior to the start of season 2 – as I learnt more about the character I was meant to portray, it made it easier to communicate with Shaurya and Tarush on my input into the story and potential ideas.

  • Action- Ongoing experiences – doing them!
  • Demonstration- Consolidate your understanding and growth

The acting for season 2 took place in the summer of 2021, between my grade 11 and 12 year. I played one of the main roles in the season. It felt good to finally get to acting given the preparation we had done as a team. We had an intense filming schedule where we met up probably about 4 times for full day shoots. This involved moving from place to place for certain scenes. Some of the locations included mount faber park, east coast park, and Tarush’s house in the orchard. Most of the scenes were actually filmed in Tarush’s house – to make it easy, we utilized certain locations around his house so it limited the amount we had to travel, given the COVID-19 situation. This especially relates to learning outcome “commitment and perseverance”. It was really hard to travel from place to place given the COVID-19 restrictions in Singapore, hence we had to adapt our ideas as a team in terms of the location, hence why we utilized the orchard area and the area around Tarush’s house to the best of our abilities, minimizing travel. It also made planning essential so that we all knew what to do on the day of shooting, which actually made the whole process as efficient as possible.

Investigation- Initial sign-up and investigation of the activity

My interest in film grew in the summer of 2020, when my two friends and I (Shaurya Vinod and Tarush Gandhi) took part in a 1 week film summer course by NAS academy. During the summer course, we worked together on our own individual projects. However, as the course came to an end, we had all enjoyed it so much that we knew we all wanted to work and collaborate on a bigger project together – then came the idea for the movie ‘Listen’.

Initially, Tarush and Shaurya (the directors of the film) approached me to help and contribute to the project. This not only included acting in the film itself, but also included me helping out ‘behind the scenes’ with the equipment, camera work and the story itself. Tarush and Shaurya had initial ideas of what the film would look like – what especially attracted me to the opportunity was the incorporation of music into the story. Both Tarush and I make music together, and the fact that he planned to base this project around his own development as an artist, made me especially keen into joining the team and helping out. It was not an easy decision as both the directors explained to me that I would need to be committed to my role in helping them, but at the end of the day I decided to join the team and work on the project. Not only was I excited to build upon my pre-existing film knowledge, but I was also excited to have the opportunity to do all this, whilst spending time with two of my closest friends.

Reflection 2: Volleyball

Reflection 2: Volleyball

Learning Outcome: Commitment and Perseverance

Reflecting back on my volleyball experience, I think that I displayed perseverance and commitment throughout the season. Given that the activity itself required all the athletes to train 3 times a week, it is fair to say that a certain amount of commitment was shown from not only myself, but as well as peers, in attending the training sessions each week. It was the first time I had really signed up for the volleyball season so I had very little prior experience with the team themselves, before signing up. However, I decided to commit to it and showed up at all the training sessions no matter what. As the season progressed, unfortunately I grew to dislike the atmosphere at training, and the amount of pressure other individuals would put on less experienced players like myself. Although I was a bit uncomfortable with that, I still decided to persevere on with the activity as I had already committed to it – in that, I made the most of my experience. Although I wouldn’t say I’d sign up for another season, I did take away a lot of skills (that I talked about in previous reflections) from the activity and in my mind it was worth a shot. I had limit experience with playing volleyball prior to this, so my thinking was that I had to persevere through the trainings, and at least in the end, if I decided that the sports not for me, at least I can say open and honestly that I did try my best during the training sessions and that I did give volleyball the time of day.

Reflection #3: Jazz Band

Reflection #3: Jazz Band

Learning Outcome: Challenge and Skills

For my final reflection of Jazz Band, I would like to focus on the learning outcome “Challenge and Skills”. One thing that I definitely developed over the year was my clarinet and musical skills themselves. Over the last few reflections, I reflected on the challenges that were faced throughout the year. But having faced the challenges posed by COVID-19, I think that ultimately led to me developing my skills as a musician. Playing an instrument like the clarinet, you are never really heard much in a band setting, like the saxophones are heard, for example. But having to record music and video recordings in smaller groups, this really made me focus on honing my clarinet skills as a musician, having to especially pay attention to time and rhythm, given that in smaller groups, everything and everyone can be heard. So despite there being challenges this year, these challenges actually pushed me to become a better musician and a better clarinet player.

Medea’s Character – Pause & Reflect

Medea’s Character – Pause & Reflect

Write a detailed explanation of the ways in which Euripides presents Medea’s character and situation to the audience.

Euripides first introduces Medea’s character by giving context. Euripides uses the Nurses character to give context to the situation Medea finds herself in. Immediately in line 7, the nurse describes Medea as “heart battered by her love for Jason”, which immediately depicts to the audience that the play is revolved around a relationship, and a toxic one as such. The first time Medea speaks in line 96 she states “I hate my life. How can I put an end to it?”. Not only does this showcase the violent and suicidal thoughts of Medea’s character, immediately reflecting the extent of her grief, but it also highlights to the audience that the extent of Medea’s frustration and anger is immense. This contrasts with normal romantic plays where the woman is often grieving silently in sorrow – in this play, this sense of sorrow and grief is clearly translated into anger and violence. Euripides’s use of descriptive language in the words “wild animal glare” in the nurse’s description of Medea conveys violent and out of the ordinary behaviour of Medea, comparing Medea to the violent nature of an animal, almost suggesting that she can’t be tamed – this foreshadows the killing of her children in the sense that her violence can’t be tamed or controlled, leading to her killing her two children. Her wild and out of the ordinary anger is also emphasised further by the role of the chorus, which state in line 181 “Hurry before she hurts anyone inside”. The chorus, being the voice of the corinthian women, reflect uneasiness at this point episode one – it is evident that chorus is worried about Medea and how she may hurt someone as a result of her unprecedented anger.
