Economic Growth and Environmental Sustainability Tension

Humans constantly use resources from the earth to provide for their needs. As more and more products are developed and manufactured, the thirst for power and money becomes more frequent. In order to grow economically, we need to continue using the earths resources to gain money but as a result, our ability to be sustainable decreases. Business tycoons might have more anthropocentric values as their main ideal is to provide for mankind and they might not consider the negative effects that come with exploiting the earth’s resources. On the contrary, people with ecocentric values will be strongly against mass manufacturing as the waste products harm the environment greatly and won’t be able to sustain mankind if we continue to take it’s resources. It can be argued though, that perhaps someone with anthropocentric views could think that preserving the earth will benefit humans in the long run and this view has both anthropocentric and ecocentric ideals.

In my opinion, people with technocentric values might be able to solve the tension between economic growth and environmental sustainability to some extent. If a product that could be made without harmful byproducts that would be able to prevent a major global issue, such as climate change, from escalating, and also at an affordable price, tensions might be lessened because aspects of economic and sustainable growth are taken into consideration.
