Service #3

After spending all this time with the children I was able to get a better perspective of a large community that I had never thought about so much. This experience taught me a lot about the life that disabled people lead which I had never put so much thought into. I feel that as a community we could do much more to be inclusive to all different types of people whether it be they are mentally or physically disabled. I am now much more aware of the way I act and my responsibility as a member of this community to extend my hand towards those in need. By gaining more awareness it could help those that need the help by just letting people know what they need and how it is our responsibility as a global community to take these people into consideration when making plans or changes. In the future I hope to see a better developed society to accommodate for these people whether it be in physical infrastructure or in aid programs.

Service #2

During my time spent at the lighthouse service I had to be a lot more sensitive with my actions as the children were physically disabled. I have never had to interact and work this close with a group of disabled people who were also very young children. We planned and took into consideration the two groups of children who were either hard of hearing or had weak eyesight. In order to better understand what types of activities to do we consulted their teachers and planned around what they suggested and as the service went on we began introducing our own activities which we believed would work. We did run into problems with religion as some of the children found one of the activities (just dance) to have images of women which were too provocative. We made sure that the teachers were aware of the activities we were doing and made sure that the children were safe when they were in our care. We also planned a long term dance project for the kids making sure to teach and include everyone in the dance.

Final EE Reflection

I felt the initial pilot study wasn’t conclusive enough to provide me with a foolproof method which could have affected the outcome of my results. During the course of the experiments, the time it would take to complete the trials was longer than anticipated which made it more difficult to complete the write up due to time constraints. Another factor that made it challenging was the supervisor change, halfway through the investigation my original supervisor had left and I had to continue alone for some time. The first draft was submitted with large missing features and therefore the feedback wasn’t fully conclusive off the entire write up. Throughout the process I did manage to learn new skills such as gaining a better understanding to use Microsoft Excel and learning new ways to process different types of data such as the Mann-Whitney U test. While the experiments proved to be challenging (especially the amount of time it requires to setup) I did manage to get conclusive results and due to that I was able to assess the data as I had originally planned to.

Extended Essay RC2

Throughout the writing process I have had conversations with my supervisor and have made progressive changes to my writing direction as the essay came together. After completing a pilot, the final method for the study was made and was completed within the span of the week. With the experiment complete I have since then changed and slightly altered my question to form a more concise argument and also changed the data analysis I was originally going to implement. I changed from a simple graphing and finding gradient difference to instead using a scientific test called the Mann Whitney U test. I made this change as this test could give a better overview to my results instead of only comparing different values. I have learnt along the way proper formatting  and how to use Microsoft excel which is helping me form a clear line of thought in my writing.

Service

Since joining this service I have been quite involved in ways that I didn’t think I would. In general I don’t work well with people I don’t know and would be rather quiet in more social/collaborative projects, but this time I have really come out of my comfort zone and have been more expressive and involved than I have ever been. While I could still be more helpful in supporting my groups in terms of planning and ideas for collaborative works that includes everyone’s disabilities, I have felt that the children have really started to embrace our activities. One of the children has grown quite fond of me and I hope to further develop this relationship but also begin to explore the other children personalities and traits. I also think that as a group we did well considering the ethics and choices we made with the children always making sure everyone had something to do and wouldn’t be left out or feel insecure. I think we recognised well that they wouldn’t be able to interact with people like we usually do and adapted well to it, not all the time as we would slip up every often but I think that’s part of the learning experience.

Initial reflection

From the beginning I knew I wanted to write my EE on a bio related topic as several of my hobbies are directly/indirectly linked to the subject. I have brainstormed a few ideas with peers on muscle building as a topic which was dropped after discussions with my EE supervisor. I was interested in the effect diet had on muscle building: either on a calculated daily diet or a supplement based and the effectiveness of different variables . After much consideration, we settled on studying the differences and effects of different chicken farming methods. Specifically, I want to find out the effect on chicken’s muscle, or the quality of meat. I will look into the effect of specific enzymes and proteins in the muscle to determine the differences between farming methods. My theory is the main differences would most likely be from  the variation in environments and rate of exercise. The findings would help me determine which is better for human consumption.

Maths And ME

My name is Chien Yu Huang but I go by Chien. I was here for IGCSE standard maths, I didn’t particularly enjoy IGCSE maths but any maths for that fact. I think I would generally associate maths with boredom and difficulty but sometimes joy, I feel the first two most of the time but when i understand what to do and everything is going smoothly I feel joy. I prefer learning visually and having people explain to me the maths but I need to start learning for myself, I have a tutor and I feel that even if I learn all the formulas I don’t understand completely and rely heavily on the advice from others. I tend to feel slightly embarrassed if I don’t understand and would only ask peers or someone close. I am quite independent in my learning but not very good at it, Rather I would say it is a weakness, organisation is also something I have always struggled with but have made improvement since last year and I hope to see more results soon. I am hoping to do better this year and don’t want to fall behind in terms of my understanding which I ill try to achieve with better organisation and in class participation.

I think that as the economy grows the environmental sustainability decreases as our resources are being used up and we are going to longer lengths to acquire the resources we want and need. The technocentric wouldn’t mind use to continue rapidly depleting our resources as they believe that technology could fix this, for example Elon Musk has started to create sustainable new way of life so in a way because we are using up all our resources we start looking for new ways to support ourselves. Without this need there would be no development”supply and demand”. The fossil fuel market is one of the biggest in the world and is also causing most of the pollution but their perspective is that it makes them money and also the people rely heavily on it and that is why they still go through a great effort to get it. Another stake holder is the customers who are demanding the use of oil because it is implemented into their lives, not all consumers use oil though as some use electricity and most people don’t even have access to oil. As long as the consumers demand growth they stake holders will continue to develop and the environmental sustainability will continue to drop down with it.
