Personal Statement

This year has definitely been the most strange of my schooling years because of the obvious coronavirus but I think that my school year hadn’t changed too much because of it. I started off the year continuing the service that I was doing in grade 9 with the role of logistics officer. I think that this was really beneficial for me because not only did I get to make further connections with new people that are differently-abled but I also crafted my organisational skills and communication skills with the organisers of the NGO. During season 2 I also took part in U19-A basketball team, although this year was a lot different to last year because I was injured for the first half of the season. This changed my school year as I had to regain strength both physically and mentally. Although the end of the season wasn’t as I imagined I think that it was nice to have a team that we all built together to know that we have all bonded over a sport. As school came to an end I think that it was very difficult for most of the students on campus and by having a lack of closure was weird for me but I think that at the moment I am finding a new normal.

What quarantine has taught about myself.

I think that quarantine has been quite a strange time for me especially because I consider myself to be quite a social person and I never realised that until now. I have learnt new methods about how to find some sort of normality in lockdown especially with the lack of people in my household. It’s especially weird for me because I was so used to living with my brothers. Though at the moment, I think that new habits have been created. For example, I find that having a schedule really helps so for me to say plan when I exercise and what I do is more beneficial for me because I can figure out what I need to do and when I need to do it. This is because I think that structure is better for me. Additionally, I think that doing some little exercise with my mum is really fun for both of us because we can spend time together in another environment, we like to go on walks especially around our condo or going on bike rides around the reservoir. I think that though quarantine is hard  I think that I am learning more about myself.

Transition Process

The transition process was smooth for me because I relatively knew what I wanted to study. Though I knew some subjects I had to talk to some teachers about their subjects to further clarify the subject. The grade 11 transition talk helped a lot because it helped me think about not only the subjects I want to take but also my extracurriculars I am thinking of taking next year. Also with the transition website and presentation, I found that it was almost easier to think about what I could/would like to study in the future especially in a university or further.

Reflection 23/08/19

This is the end of the first week and we have been tasked to reflect. At the beginning I was excited to see my friends and since it was the first day we were off time table which meant that it was more about adjusting to the new environment rather than academics. The first few days of class were easy and hard at the same time as I was surprised to see that I had remembered as much as I had but I was also thinking that I should’ve prepared more to advance the understanding. Today we were also off time table and we talked about service and activities and what is available to us at school. This was interesting because we talked about specific topics and how one would help with that “problem”, for example, one was how could we help Singapore integrate people with Cerebral Palsy. Then at the end, we were asked to talk about what service meant to us, why we did it, what are good attributes for a person who does service etc. After that, we talked about activities and it made me wonder what I could try this year as there is no required reflection or a certain amount of activities I have to do.

Personal Statement

Throughout these past few years I have studied in many schools that have taught me different things. This has influenced me to be the person I am today. This year though I would say that I have grown the most. The transition from middle school to high school was easier for me than others as I knew a few high schoolers due to out of school activities and  in the beginning the workload was made heavier throughout the year. Also throughout the year work and activities became easier to handle. Through continuing my sports and making SEASAC to going on a new type of school trip it has truly made me grow. Over the October break I went to Borneo where I learnt more about the environment and the life in it but also made new friends that went to Dover. After the October break I found out that I made u19A team for basketball, there was a group of 4 grade 9’s on the team making me one of the youngest. Through that experience, it has made me not only a better player but has made me life-long friends which I never would have met if it weren’t for this experience. Over the next few years I would like to continue to play on the team and grow my role. With my service AMK Minds and being logistics officer it has forced me to be more organised and through the service time with the partners I have made new connections with the service partners.

The Meg: The Myth, The Legend

In this article, they talk about the extinct species called the Megalodon which is a shark. The Megalodon which is the shark featured in the film “The Meg”. It talks about it’s inconsistencies in the movies and also how it isn’t possible. The article also said that the way that sharks are portrayed in films can affect the real world.

I promise to myself that I will cut down on the fish I eat but also take into consideration that everything is not real in films. I want to research more into how sharks are treated and how movies can affect them.

What are we really learning at school?

I believe that the answers to this article does not relate to what UWCSEA would teach. The thing about these answers is that I personally cannot relate to because of the way I have grown up and the school that I go to. I think that in this school because we focus on different aspects of the students life that we can not only focus on our academics. Most of the answers were academic relating and very few were about life lessons and how they should treat themselves and other people. I think that we learn a lot in this school because of what the school stands for and almost all the teachers and staff try and push the message of equality and how we can be the best version of ourselves.

How has technology changed the way that other people relate with others? Is the change for the better?

Technology as a whole will always have an impact on humans whether it is making their life easier or harder, and I think that depending on what type of person you are and what kind of technology you use will change the outcome of how we relate to others. I think that if you love technology and use it on a daily basis it will change the way you relate with others because of the difference in lifestyles. I do not think that technology is the only thing that could change the way that other people relate with others because if you have a different lifestyle you cannot always relate with others as you don’t live the same way. Although it changes our lifestyle I think it can help us sympathise with others as you may not know how they feel but with technology, you can learn more about an issue. Using technology anyone can learn more about anything and with knowledge can come many positive outcomes.

Personally, I  think that this change is for the better because by using technology we can educate ourselves and just because we can’t empathise with others because they’re in a different situation, we can learn more about their circumstances, educate ourselves and sympathise.
