EE- Viva Voce Final Reflection!

This EE process was full of new insights in a field (gymnastics) that I wouldn’t have otherwise explored. I was quite surprised that certain exercise environments could unintentionally be increasing body dissatisfaction. It makes combating this issue even more complex because people often consider exercise as the ultimate tool to increase self-confidence. It’s also made me more aware of how I perceive gymnasts, especially when commentators discuss their size and thinness. Societies often hold expectations for these athletes regarding the ‘aestheticness’ and physique of their bodies and we expect them to be unsusceptible to dissatisfaction. However, some elite gymnasts do perceive their bodies quite negatively. This truly is a global issue and I valued how a world studies essay allowed me to reflect on the multidisciplinary implications of my research- it helped me snap out of simply summarising studies (which I was doing initially). I’m now further intrigued about to what extent body dissatisfaction is manifested in younger gymnasts and even male athletes.
