Until last lesson, I thought that there were 2 main reasons that refugees flee their home country for. Economic causes, such as job opportunities, inflation etc. Or political reasoning, such as poor government action, discrimination or sexual preference. These 2 reasons (Economic and political) cause a lot of people to migrate every year, but I hadn’t taken into account the amount of people that need to flee their country because of environmental reasoning such as natural disasters, sea levels rising, and risky weather conditions. With most of these causes being directly linked back to human activity and industrialization. Climate Change refugees are being affected in major ways, however many people don’t need to move country , but many move within their country making them a climate change migrant. According to the UN “In 2018 alone, 17.2 million new displacements associated with disasters in 148 countries and territories were recorded and 764,000 people in Somalia, Afghanistan and several other countries were displaced following a drought” Unfortunately, due to increased CO2 emissions from human activity, ocean pollution and plastic waste etc. these numbers are only increasing each year. After realising this it became a lot clearer to me that Climate Change Migration and Climate change refugees is an issue that doesn’t just affect a certain region/country but it’s a global issue that affects everyone and is caused by everyone. It will require a collective effort in order to allow for society to erase this issue or even just reduce it. But it’s possible and can be done. And this starts with educating everyone and individually reducing our carbon footprint.
