I have joined a service group called Tampines minds: fun and dance. In this service, we work with people ranging from the age of 15 to 45 who are all mentally disabled. They come to the East campus and we take them to the conference room where we sing and dance for an hour. We try to keep things simple as they all have a different level of proficiency and we don’t want to exclude anyone. So far we have only had one session with them and it wasn’t what I was expecting at all. They were all very friendly and capable of doing many things. They were willing to participate and gave it everything they had. I was exhausted after the 45 minutes. Before meeting them I had never had contact with them and we were all a little bit anxious but now we can start making plans to have games or small activities. Some of the challenges I have faced so far was knowing what to do and what not to do. I didn’t want to upset anyone or exclude anyone either and its still something I’m working on. The challenges that I’m facing are all in my head and I need to learn to adjust my thinking and be able to dance and have fun. I’m going to start to stop overthinking things and just trust my instincts at the time of what to do.
