LO7 Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
We have finalized we will focus on organizing language (Chinese and Japanese), singing, dancing, art, and team building activities for project week. Before making detailed plans, we were required to go through the “Child Protection – for UWCSEA Project Week groups volunteering with children’s NGOs” to be aware of the consequences of our actions. Although we were aware of many of the statements such as not taking children outside of their placement alone or without the permission of the placement Supervisor, some of the statements made us become more cautious about the activities we plan. For example, the presentation mentioned to be mindful of what is appropriate and inappropriate in physical contacts (eg. instead of hugging encourage other forms of physical contact such as high-fives) and understand the cultural boundaries. Through some research on the Vietnamese culture, we learned to avoid pointing at people and things with your index finger because it is considered disrespectful. When planning our activities we made sure it is culturally appropriate and also follows the statements on the slide.
