English Poetry Notes

Fear of others:

– “Xenophobe.” Fear of other people spreading the virus to you, prejudice against others.

–  “We scramble for masks like talismans.” People are holding onto a mask like it’s some sort of magical shield that will protect them from people and the virus.

– “Be on your guard, but be slow to judge others.” Be careful of the virus but don’t judge people based on their race and their background.

Masking real thoughts and feelings:

– “To ward off nightmares of infections and other phantoms.” The mask protect us from the virus and as we put on the mask, we reveal our true thoughts about certain people.

– “Xenophobes are plagues of terror.” Due to the spread of the virus, it’s easy for people to point fingers and spread hate.

– “They mask their true intentions.” People are using the virus to be more racist and prejudice against some people.

Fear of fear itself:

– “That we need protection from our own delusions.” People are overreacting and panicking unnecessarily which does more harm than good.

– “This disease of our own ignorance.” We’re ignorant towards who we should blame for the virus. We’re scared of the virus so we take that fear and blame it on someone else.

– “Until we know what has truly gone viral is fear itself.” The virus is not the only thing that’s viral, the fear and xenophobe that people are spreading is also going viral.
