Robyn Hayes – Justice Through Photos

After listening to her speech, I was inspired not only because of her skills of making the world a better place in terms of stopping child or premature marriage, but also by the fact that she was so resilient and enthusiastic about achieving her goal. She was not even trained to be a photographer or a videographer, but instead in research, which was in fact also advantageous to her job at the moment. She also then continued to impress as she said that, “words don’t come as easy photography does”. I personally sometimes feel the same way as some pictures cannot be described by words because they are so important, influential etc. as well some imagery having different perspectives on it, and for others, it will take a shorter amount of time to explain meaning showing someone a picture will get themselves straight to the point. It was a huge disappointment to hear that girls are worth something only because they have the skill of getting pregnant and giving birth, followed by the fact that one-third of girls under eighteen and one-ninth under fifteen in developing nations are forced into child marriage. This then forces them to drop out of school which results in a lack of education, not even knowing about feminine hygiene. She also explained her love for children and working with them, working as a teacher in a school prior to setting up her own business and working for it currently. Her husband then decided to give her a camera on one lucky Christmas morning, which merged with her other favourite hobby of teaching and this is how it all started. She then went on to buy some cameras for the girls in Ethiopia and they instantly fell in love with them, immediately realising that the camera is a symbol of hope and remembrance, as they can now look upon their past life experiences and they will always be there within.
