NYAA Reflection – Preliminary Training and Qualifying Venture

The preliminary training allowed me to learn a number of key skills for the exhibition to Wales, such as how to use as well as read basic maps. I also found out how to use contour lines, how to find the bearing and how to use a compass in relation to calculating the direction. I also discovered how to adapt to different temperatures asĀ it was very hot during the day but was freezingly cold at night. Throughout the whole trip, the whole aim was to complete a trek up and around the mountains located in Snowdonia National Park. I was given the ability to work individually and in groups, which meant that when plans needed to be made it was required for each of us to consider and take into consideration the whole team. I needed to collaborate with people who I had not known before, including students from other schools. I engaged with the issue of environmental global importance as well as we had to look after it by picking up rubbish we found along the way of the trek. I also learned about how important it was to stay together and motivate each other as it made the overall trip not only a more enjoyable experience but an easier one as well. I faced the new challenge of being put into an environment in which I had never been present in before, not only did Wales have a much rougher terrain than the majority flat Singapore, but also other people and animals. However, I realised that I was pretty good at working as well as doing physical activities under the immense heat and burning sun as this is Singapore’s climate twenty-four seven. I also realised that diet was a very important aspect of the trip, as we needed to eat enough food to be energised for the whole trip, which I learned I was pretty good at as I was almost never hungry throughout the whole trip and had the stamina to complete all the hikes without feeling very tired. I also realised that I was a good collaborator and a communicator as we were able to always be on the right path and never get lost.
