Stress and worry

The article above delves into stress and axiety. Talking about what it is, what effects it has on a person and how one can minimise its persistence in life.

Tell us about a time you experienced worry, stress or anxiety. Describe how it affected you and how you tried to cope with it? What might you do differently now that you have read the article?

Anytime words such as stress and anxiety get thrown around, I can’t help but reminisce the almost torturous nights before exams. Especially the eve before the ad math exam. There was many reasons to leading up to my unfortunate situation. But most important was my lathargic perogotive, I procrastinated for a long time. This had caused me to go into a panic and I had essentially dug my own grave. But it wasn’t my unpreparedness that had effected me in the longterm, it was the worry that I had embraced.

You see, the when trying to ease my mind with penitent slumber, I had thought I would be able to sleep it off. That I’ll be able to leave this twilight zone of sorts, where every second was an suffocation spiral into stress where I was embalmed with a tsunami of sweat. Yet I had kept repeating thoughts of how unprepared and how bad i’ll do on the mock exams.  It was this continuous negative thinking that had been the root of my malfeasance as I got a horrible night of sleep, and the result I was expecting was even further diminished.

After reading this article, I realise that I should I have relinquished my self from this cruel mortal coil – I’m just kidding – I should have mentally eased myself instead trying to sleep it off. I should have thought about how miniscule these events are in the grand scheme of my life. I should have done something productive like actually study, which would have definitely soothed myself in the current state of panic I was in. I now know that I was to hasteful in my thinking and should have taken a deep breath, coped with it in a better way.

Music, Crucial in a Pandemic

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/03/11/magazine/best-songs.html#tylerthecreator

What is your reaction to the essay you read and the song you listened to? Had you heard the song before? What did you think of the writer’s analysis of and reflection about the song? Did you agree or disagree with what they said? What other thoughts or feelings do you have about the song?

The song in question being “earfquake” by Tyler the creator. The instance of the pandemic has cultivated an environment that harbours great anxiety and fear. As such people are finding any way to maintain morale through an assortment of media. The specific song has been regarded as a very special one in times like this. I fully condone the idea of this song being one of peace and solace. The article portrays Tyler being someone that this generation finds hope in due to his extremely eccentric personality and his ability to display an immense sense of freedom. These traits are perfectly conveyed in his song earfquake that blends a happy and mellow melody with upbeat and fun vocals. I’ve heard the song before and really liked it, everytime I hear it I can’t help but sing along.

I think this song also carries the strong emotional values the article touched on. About how Tyler’s voice is one of fun and freedom, in world that feels cruelly shackled, now more so than ever. It’s that personality that’s able to resonate with the younger generations and has a very important uplifting effect.

DT Problem solving

In the making of my final product I had developed both soft and technical skills such as prototyping, and in accordance; client empathy and problem solving. Because in the process of criterion 4; the planning for manufactruing stage, the design I had chosen in criterion 3 had many problems that I had to fix.

This is the original design I had in mind as I had tried to accomodate for most of my clients needs, but her most explicitly expressed want was to have an ergonomic, smooth product. Which I feel firstly displays empathy.

Yet whilst prototyping, some problems arised. To the right would display the progessional thinking and innovation I had to undergo. I had come under many problems. Firstly there was functionality problems shown in the first prototype as the design wasn’t able to stand up. Secondly  This hugely developed my adaptability as in prototyping I would take images and consult whether the prototype fitted the desired traits the client had wanted.

The photos above display the changes I had to make in order to comply by the clients wants. The second problem I had to face, was in the manufacturing stage was the immense difficulty of producing it. I had to then change both my method of production and proceedingly the actual design of the product. As you can see below, the CAD design displays the huge change I had to quickly adress. This shows client empathy, and developed my skills in adaptabilityCNnc mode.png

Immoralities in a Pandemic

How much responsibility do retailers in general have to prevent stockpiling? Should they place limits on how many items, like hand sanitiser, a person can buy?

In this article, writers, Shannon Doyne and

In times like these it would now seem that the constant continuation of these harsh standards has truly brought out peoples sense of self preservation and malevolence. People are now seeking to capitalise on the the struggles with necessities that people have. Personally I’m am all for a more free market that incites more innovation and competition amongst the economy. Yet it is a concept that shouldn’t be used so harmfully in a situation like this, as it not only encourages the inability to maintain hygiene; directly harming the people who are unfortunate enough to not afford the product at the increased price. But it also elicits secondhand harm to everyone else, as the more people can’t get sanitised the longer the virus will stay in the system, the longer it has to find new host, the longer it has to mutate and develop. It’s clear to say that the benefits of a free market, hardly apply in a situation like this.

Yet this whole debacle, doesn’t seldom bear its ownership to that of the retailers. As it would be fair to posit that it is the retailers responsibility to prevent this from happening through creating limits. I fully agree with this, as this isn’t the time to capitalise on the free market, it is a time to come together (metaphorically) and band with our fellow man to get through this horrible event. Because if the retailers would have set limits and have allowed for more people to equally get their necessities this charade would have never happened. That would then not create the the problems I had stated earlier of essentially being accomplice to this virus.

COVID-19 & Social Solidarity

How can we help one another during the coronavirus outbreak? What can you, your friends, family and community do to look out for one another?

In the midst of the corona virus, almost all contact with other people has been prohibited, unless deemed essential. Although this sets nations on a path to get out of this epidemic, this has many harmful repercussions. As stated in the article above this not only seems like extra tedium to the already harsh anxiety the virus has caused, but it has serious effects on peoples livelihoods. As many people are forced to relinquish wages, the dock in wealth has made it very difficult to keep up with health care. As currently it in America costs up to 20,000$ out of pocket for people with out insurance. These high costs along with the increasing costs/difficulty in obtaining sanitary products further harms struggling families.

Seeing these difficulties arise for other people, is the point of the article as it pushes social solidarity. The act of helping one another for due to an empathy stemming from a mutual situation is what he encourages people to take part of. We can all take part in this action as everyone is in the same situation. Firstly everyone should be aware of this fact, this surprisingly is a huge problem. As many stores and supermarkets are being essentially raided and sanitary products are being hoarded by individual consumers. This is extremely detrimental as people then hike up the prices, as mentioned before people are suffering from lack of pay. So firstly everyone should only buy what they need to support themselves or their family. Also the monotony of the lifestyle in quarantine is another thing many people are struggling with. So in order to help people through this time make sure to be there for whoever you are, like your family or significant other its a great way to keep up morale in these difficult times. Also for people who are unfortunate enough to not have anyone living with them, try to reach out to them digitally and check up on them.

Overall although I do agree with the article to an extent, I don’t agree with cancelling social distancing; but more so encouraging people to act more so on empathy to help people feel cared about. These times especially require society to act like this as the sole purpose of the quarantine is to protect people.

ReCycle: Service Reflection

You may or may not have seen the saga of posts I have made dedicated to this service. But from the title of this post, I believe that you’ll be able to deduce the aim of this post. In this post, I strive to inscribe the experience that ReCycle has given me over it’s two term course. What I’ve found challenging, learned and what I enjoyed.

First of all I would like to say that this service  was a service rife with opportunities for learning. In the beginning I wast simply a zygote in the expansive world of bike systems. As soon as I begin to work on my first bike, it was a mess disassembling the parts. I was left with an amalgam of nut, bolts and confusing machinery.

The process being complicated, I naturally went to Mr. Willams seeking help. From this I learned how to replace a tyre, how to fully disassemble a bike, reattach a chain and how to remove the braking system from a bike. With this information, I was quickly able to finish refurbishing my bike and assist with many other people.

From my efforts I learned about the methods of building a bike and the different ways they can function. This new information was not only rewarding to learn, but also taught me the use of many different tools. Being able to use these tools turned me sanguine with curiosity.

Furthermore, working on these bikes brought me in close proximity to many different people, who’s perspectives were not only unique but enhancing to my experience. I am glad to say that I was able to make new friends, who’s input I now have the benefit of using.

Overall, I feel like I have been giving the access to opportunity of many new future prospects with this service. The challenges I have faced have not only calloused my hands with experience, but brought me many new friendships and learnings that shall be cherished for years to come

Personal Statement

Throughout all of my academic career, I have always felt I had an affinity for science. I feel like this is due to the long gruelling hours my parents had encouraged me to do as a child. Although this past experience may push some people to hold a certain subject in bad taste. I highly enjoyed it, I felt as if the vast expansive knowledge there is about science peaked my interest. Yet I do show remorse in the perforation of subjects, making myself seldom devoted the sciences. I think that I should continue to follow this policy, in order to maintain a healthy balance between grades. But realising that I have a strong liking towards sciences I want to discover how strong my likes are. Possibly opening up promising future career options.

I don’t know how all of these statements translate directly on to my aspirations. But I believe that the most logical and straight forward approach, is to extend my time spent on the subject. This might mean taking into the higher level sciences, as these classes would provide me with the catharsis that comes from learning the sciences. Yet only placing myself in a nurturing habitat won’t help me. I have to take great strides in education off my own volition, otherwise the attempt at bettering myself would be in vain. This would mean I have to average 7’s in the HL science courses I take.

Overall, I believe that furthering my appreciation for science would provide me with a prolific array of skills that I require to acquire accomplishments I desire in my future. This means that I will be taking up HL Chemistry and HL Biology. It would also require me pushing myself to accomplish high grades in science. This may mean I devote more time to studies, as I would have to compensate for the increased work load I intend to take. Yet it would be a sacrifice that I am willing to take, in the name of bettering myself.

English descriptive writing

English has always been one of my favourite subjects. Considering its vast structure of vocabulary and how even the most minute differences of wording has the ability to change the entire configuration of a sentence. In english we have been working on our descriptive writing capabilities. Firstly we decided to write piece describing any single person and their presence, whether they were fiction or not. These first two paragraph is my attempt at such.

A grim shadowy dark figure is confided in a small chair, equipped with an ominous gargoyle grey jacket with a large zip biting through his torso, only his head appears visible aside his drab clothing. Although his head is almost reflective in it’s manner, his bald oval dome sets a demeanor of aggression and despicableness. His attire is unkempt and shaggy, the furs of his jacket coaxed an a foreign an unfamiliar canine fur. A wool scarf sprawled around his neck, decorated with bold stripes of black and grey, weaved by someone with a lack of experience but clearly embedded with love. His bottom half proceeds with the theme and delicate pair of silk black pants, with fine white porcelain white lines running through. They leads everyone’s eyes to a dagger like pair of classic shoes, their ends being cartoonishly sharp. Although most of his regalia exudes elegance and installs an ambiance of finesse in the room, he resides in the waiting room of a ballet class.

After the class had come to close what appeared to be his three young daughters, beaming with joy at the sight of their fatherly figure. His shy and hidden position, folded outwards as he stretched his daunting thin legs. They surprisingly held up up his bulbous radish-like torso, and as he paced towards his children so meticulously, the rooms eyes followed. When arrived he stood poised with tremendous power, his chest bursting with competence. His bushy and furred eyebrows perked up in judgment, his paper thin lips part ways in path of speech. The audience stare sternly in suspense for his verdict.

After honing our skills, I learnt that my use of words such as “aggressive” and “cartoonish” were extremely vague, and my lack of metaphors didn’t supply the reader with a relative presence. After learning these things; we decided to choose a singular photo and proceed to construct a small excerpt on the photo, the photo I had chosen was one of the outdoor school balcony hallways that have been embedded in vines. After this piece I feel much more confident in my descriptive writing skills.

The path omits tranquility, it’s vast emptiness only graced by the soft precipitation of snow flakes of beige, a moonshine grey webs in between. Life seems to be dormant here, it’s only residents being stubborn and old cedement. But as you step through, the walls faces sparkle in surprise, as their crumbling lives are seldom witness to a visitor. Their tired eyes blinking in shock, they sway with dance, fluttering in unpredictable patterns they reem with joy. Parallel to the palpitations of the walls you notice a harlequin green dancer her partner holding her tightly with firm grey hands, their dance a passionate salsa. As they intertwine and spin in perfect succession you notice the illuminate the path. Walking through and looking down at your pacing members they seem tiny. Like waves leaning against a gargantuan cliff side, tides repetitively marching through the path.

Service: ReCycle

My high school life has just recently struck upon an abundant source of joy and pride. ReCycle, a service that specialises in the refurbishing of unwanted bicycles has made feel extremely accomplished. In the service I am forced to use my hands in order to break down the bikes and then subsequently put them back together. The experience given by the service is not only extremely fulfilling, but directly helps maintain the schools goal of being sustainable.

So far in the service we have split up into small groups branching off into separate bicycles, I myself have assisted in the rebuilding of two bikes. Along the path of this accomplishment I have founded new friendships and strengthened old ones. These relationships have been extremely fruitful in supplying me with further improving myself

So far this service has been extremely successful, and I strive to be a further part in it. In it’s future I hope that I can help everyone in the service, maintain a sustainable behaviour, and gain a stronger knowledge of building bikes.

Table Tennis analysis

This is a  project that I have been working on in PE class. I feel like I would like to share this impromptu analysis video, as I feel confident in my analysis of my skill. I would also like to showcase it as humorous amateur video. Although I think I highlighted my skills very well, I was infatuated in my hubris and barely glanced over my flaws. I now know that in future situations similar to this one, I need to have a more nuanced perspective.

My NYAA experience so far

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g5xXEnKtFQE4d2zzIYQ_UjFzNge9sdhe/view?usp=sharing

I have thoroughly enjoyed my entire NYAA experience up-till now, I have found it to be an enriching journey that has taught me a plethora of new features about myself. I specifically have enjoyed the blog posts, because I have now gained a strong sense of self reflection and drive for improvement from it. I also found going outside of school to attain my service goals to be an amusing activity, what originally thought was going to be annoying, became an extremely prideful chain of actions.

Although the experience has left me brimming with glee, I have found it to be occasionally difficult to keep up with the portfolio post quota, as I have been just newly adjusted to the busy lifestyle of an ex middle-schooler. But in the transition, many flaws have found egress from within. Although these flaws have become exposed, I feel like writing drafts and posting about it has made myself more aware and given me the ability to oppose my flaws.

Overall I think that although at the beginning I found the NYAA to be a daunting challenge. I have come to appreciate it for being able to improve myself.

Rehaan Writers Fortnight Article

The fallacies of the US prison system By Rehaan Kukean

It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.”

Nelson Mandela

The early expansion

America’s prison system has been failing to fulfil its main purpose: reduce the rate of crime. From 1970 to 2010 there was a protuberant growth in the prison population from “196,000 to 1,570,000”. This not only shows society hasn’t leashed themselves from crime in fear of incarceration but also that the prison system is failing to complete its purpose of redefining the convicts of the society. These inadequacies started from when President Ronald Reagan decided to administrate the war on drugs act, the incarceration rates skyrocketed in the 1980s. The overflow of inmates encouraged the government to seek help from the CCA, whose role was to make maintenance cost cheaper for the government and take a percentage for themselves. What ensued was what could only be expected from a corporate enterprise running government business.

The hostile invasion

Prisons were mass produced all across the nation, starting in Tennessee, over a six-year gap another sixty-six were included. Even though these prisons had been introduced; a study from the NYU school of law state that “since 2000, the effect on the crime rate of increasing incarceration has been essentially zero”. The astounding proof surrounding the conclusion that prisons have no effect on the crime rate is due to the CCA using disturbing practices to profit as much as possible. For example, phone calls from inside the prison can cost up to fifteen dollars, this is due to firms exploiting the monopoly imparted in these systems. The CCA would then treat prisons as simple goods instead of the important institution it is. The co-founder of the CCA stated that “You just sell prisons like you were selling cars or real estate or hamburgers.” This mentality has caused the CCA to disregard the needs of keeping prisoners imprisoned. Instead, they operate using cheaper solutions, like hiring fewer workers and cheaper facilities. Justice policy state that “Private prison employees earn an average of over $5,000 less than their government-employed counterparts and receive 58 fewer hours of training.” This behaviour is downright unethical, as it treats prisoners with no respect. As you can see inadequacy is a bountiful commodity in private correctional facilities. As it is not limited to only the staff and facilities, but also the corrections programs in which they say they specialise. Interview data gained from actual prisoners show that most prisoners that went into private prison GED programs only enrolled in one three hour class a day, whereas prisoners in government DOCs enrolled in full-day education programs. This shows that the CCA has been unable to properly do their job. And the very name that they’ve built is a complete lie.

Distorted candour

These numbers and evidence should point to the conclusion, that the CCA is staying true to their promise of lowering the cost of incarceration for the government. But that would be false, a NY Times article states that sustaining a person in prison “cost about the same as they do in state-run prisons.” Along with that, a study was done by the Arizona Department of Corrections state that in order to mask their cheap behaviour, private prisons use healthy inmates only. The state representative calling it “cherry picking.” A cheaper method of functioning and at the same cost means that the CCA must make a hefty profit, and that would be true. In 2015 the CCA made 1.8 billion dollars. This profuse amount of money is gained from the fact that one-fifth of America’s inmates are in for-profit facilities. Secondly, on August 18, 2016. An undercover investigation was conducted in Huntsville, Texas by their office of inspector general showed that private prisons were “less safe, less effective, and more expensive than government-run facilities”. And an expose covered by Mother Jones stated that the CCA is the second largest for-profit system in the US!

The CCA has also figured out a way to keep the routine continuous, a study done states that private prisons give out twice as many infractions. The reasoning behind this is that the CCA is paid on how full their facilities are, a situation in Arizona occurred when the private facility didn’t make it’s 97% fulfilment quota; and contracts emplaced forced the state to pay a 3 million dollar fine. This contract encourages indigent states to keep prisoners from leaving on loosely grounded reasons. Not only is this extremely unethical, but it also debases inmates that have tried hard to improve and left them with no desire for betterment.

Conclusion

Overall it’s safe to say that the US government made a huge mistake employing the “efforts” of the CCA. They have proven to have intent in only maximising marginal profits. There has been example after example of them cutting corners, and deceiving the government at the expense of the prisoners. But after knowing this what could you do to this huge problem, right? Wrong, your input is invaluable. Your input doesn’t have to be intense protests, strikes or fasting. Whether it’s simply blogging about the problem or advocating it to friends and family; getting the information out about this tragedy is a great step in the right direction.

Writers fortnite session 3: Fiona Herbert UNICEF

Stepping into this session I knew I was going to witness an extremely gritty and challenging life, someone who has devoted their life to others. Although my expectations were high, I was still overwhelmed by the immense good will of Fiona Herbert.

Her job, a child protector in Kenya demands so much from her, and yet she provides and provides. She has worked with many local NGOs in Kenya that provide shelter, sanitation and education. Originally she worked in the London burrows, with little child protection experience.

She states that the living conditions of the slums, encourage a huge HIV rate, each slum harbouring an underdeveloped society of millions. And the sad part is not only that tourists acknowledge this more than the government, most disregard the huge MEDC portion of Kenya. Whereas the government only regards them, in order to maintain a positive image of Kenya the government doesn’t push to citizens to help the situation, along with that; the NGOs get little to no support from the government. Living from paycheque to paycheque also pushes away potential volunteers.

The verdict I have reached is that UNICEF has done so much to assist the nation, that it’s now the time when Kenya is approaching a uniform MEDC.

Writers fortnite session 2: Daniel Benett

My initial thoughts on this session were expectancies of imminent disappointment. I was questioning constantly how hard could the situation for extremely successful athletes be? But I quickly learned that it’s not hard to bear the title of athlete, it’s the sacrifices to equip it and the torment caused from it’s removal.

Daniel Benett quickly grew to like football when he was young in Singapore, as it was a bulk commodity that had an immense patronage. Singapore was full of opportunities to play and he took them all. He kept growing as a player hopping from one club to another, although he was extremely talented he still intended to get a “proper job”. But this is where he learned he had to make sacrifices, when offered to play for the Singapore national team, he knew that it would be extremely difficult to come back to get a “proper job”. Nevertheless he took the offer, he became extremely successful, played with legends of the industry and now teaches kids to play.

But now coming out of the limelight the second challenge athletes face comes in, the challenge of being forgotten. I learnt that many athletes suffer depression and undergo many traumas from any injury ending their career, them losing the ability to continue their dream. I believe it’s because their careers are already extremely short, and any external reasons to make that shorter would make any person go crazy. It truly is hard living the life of an athlete.

Writers fortnite session 1: Chris Huntington

Coming into this session I was extremely optimistic, I was enthusiastic to hear an intense and vulgar story of the boxing world and how this persons firsthand experience with it. But instead I got something much more valuable than a childish story. I got deep insight to the prison system from a valued member of staff. I met Chris Huntington, whose job was a GED. His role was to teach the underprivileged convicts the essentials in education. Even basics like reading and writing were foreign to the inmates, and the inability to do function at that level is what motivates to delve into the life of crime. Although it may seem like there is little no incentive to learn, the system has given them promise of a six month reduction to their sentence for each educational milestone, such as: high school and college graduation or achieving a degree.

Although it seems like the system empowers the inmates and doesn’t exploit it’s potential power over society. The prison system’s heavy incarceration of coloured people have forbid a large quantity of coloured people’s votes, this has lead to a huge misrepresentation of these ethnic groups. Along with that, from Chris’ perspective; the prison provides little protection to convicts from possible inside attacks. He has witnessed a few of his students die in such quarrels and feels great sorrow in losing extremely promising citizens. In conclusion, this session taught me much about the incarceration system and that “knowledge never brings regret” -Chris Huntington.

Post-expedition post

Firstly I would like to say that I really enjoyed my outdoor expedition, it was challenging yet redeeming and fun in so many ways. I loved crashing through the towering rapids. I truly was a great experience that I enjoyed. But easy it was not, it was filled with so many challenges that tested my limits, such as living in an environment different to the comforts of home. Navigating the rapids was a great task, that taught me about hydrology. Yet I enjoyed these challenges.

If you weren’t aware, my investigation was focused on the impact the environment of Nepal has on it’s economic opportunity. My question specifically being: How has Nepal’s huge attraction for tourism created jobs and work?

As for my investigation. I talked to someone who knows the way of the nepalese people very well. This person was an employee who frequented the cities of Nepal and has firsthand experience in the occupations and experiences of Nepal’s lifestyle. He informed of their lifestyles and how the tourism brought from the beauties of Nepal has highly benefited them. I believe that in my investigation I discovered that Nepal has specialised in the industry of tourism. He told me that many nepalese people live lives of agriculture that is due to the towering mountains that provide lots of land for mountain side villages to thrive. But he also said that the rivers and mountains bring many nepalese people to become guides.

Tourism has made a very large impact on the people of Nepal, the new found business has allowed many new occupations such sherpas, paragliding instructors and river guides. My source told me that the large market has made many children want to become outdoor experts. Besides me getting primary info, I can see this first hand. I saw many businesses that profited from tourism and the company we went with; “Paddle Nepal” had many employees. This is further consolidated as the kayaking guides that were on our expedition said that they had known they were going to become kayak guides from a young age. They stated they knew each other from a young age, and their other friends who didn’t go into kayaking, went into other recreational activities such as paragliding. When asked to elaborate they stated that many villages and houses are built close if not directly next to these abundant rivers, as they provide water for agriculture and consumption. This close proximity acclimated them to the rapids at a young age, and in not too long they knew the entire river system like the back of their hand.

On our expedition we even got a chance to visit one of our guides village of origin. In it I not only noticed how they reside next to a stream. But the village has made empty huts, and they had a bar and other more western forms of entertainment. Although it was confusing at first this brings up the second industry of tourism; housing. The village and the city of Pokhara accommodated foreigners and tourists perfectly. The Nepalese people marketed their authenticity, as we got to see how they process lentils and how they feed the fish and the goats. The rustic mannerisms of their tasks  had all of us infatuated and eager to attempt our hand.

The people there have truly capitalised on the large input of tourists. I witnessed areas packed with hotels, just where we were staying was surrounded by hotels, and not too far from there were many stores. It was difficult to see any building beside housing or hotels. But some streets were filled with the final industry of tourism; souvenirs and comforting. They ran along a lengthy street, specialising in everything from clothing to hand crafted wooden ornaments. All of the signs were in english, meaning they understood who their demographic was. But if not item shops, there were local restaurants  claiming to serve western food and other food pandering to foreigners.

Overall I believe that the tourism brought about by the beauties of Nepal has been a great source of income for the nepalese people. Yet it is worrying, as the over saturation of the market has them competing at such low prices. This would make it hard as many people are obliged to enter on industry, even if they find it boring. Also, having such a large portion of the people invested in one industry leaves many people vulnerable to losing their jobs. EG: If there was to be an earthquake and many tourists would be afraid to travel to Nepal, many people will suffer. This means that although the massive tourism industry that Nepal boasts, it maybe extremely vulnerable.

Wunderlist

In our morning mentor class we were having a talk about organisation and methods are fellow students use in order to stay updated and efficient in the ways they manage their time. Many people were contributing to the conversation, but Teia; a good friend of mine commented on how a new application she downloaded has tremendously helped her in her time management. This application was called “Wunderlist”.

Though it has an unusual name, it is nonetheless helpful. After downloading it, I have used in many occasions to help myself. I have been much more productive and my homework is now finished at a more constant rate. The great thing is that the app can sync between my phone and laptop, making it easy to always stay on top.

But there is one difficulty I am having with it, and that is to keep it updated. With the constant flow of home work and tasks piling up, often it is much more easy to tell yourself “you’ll complete them later”. This urge makes me forget to use it as the system to operate it with is sometimes a challenge for me. But as the days go by my efficiency with it increases.

Pre expedition post

For my NYAA, I have to create an investigation on my upcoming expedition. Instead of viewing this as a burden, I tried to look upon as an enriching and educative challenge that I gladly would take up. From this investigation I have to choose a category from the sustainable compass and investigate the relationship between country of my expedition and said category.

I have chosen “Environmental Impacts & Jobs” I chose this topic because I believe that Nepal (my expedition country) has a vast and lush ecosystem and I would like to learn how it’s ecosystem impacts religion and its economy. Understanding that Nepal attracts tourists form all over the world for it’s marvellous mountain range and cascading rivers. I would like to know about how the country has acclimated it’s culture to it’s tourism. So my specific question for investigation shall be:                 How has Nepal’s huge attraction for tourism created jobs and work?

My Language world

This task was a huge challenge because I seldom reflect deeply on the way I communicate to others as it feels extremely natural for me. This is due to most of the people I speak share the mutual experience of english. Understanding this I took into account of fluidity. I started from the centre, with my name and other language related features about myself that are important. Yet derail from the main topics at hand. I tried to fit all of the objectives on the rubric on the map, so I found myself writing extremely small, legibility was my main concern due to the fact that my hand writing is hard on the eyes.

I then continued the rubric from the top left as that is how most texts are written. I simply followed the listing of the rubric as an order because it was already ordered thematically. I also found starting with “how I speak” a good choice as I found that point to be the most important. Then I did “accents and how they affect people ” because accents are large part of language identity. Then because I set up some questions about how accents may create bias in a persons opinion of someone; I felt that was related to stereo types and Judgement. That was my main thinking process, the rest of the map was based simply on the aforementioned order of the rubric. I hope you’ll like my poster.

Math graphing

When will a human swim 50m in a minute?

Throughout history it has been impossible to swim 50 meters in under a minute. The current world record is 1 minute 42 seconds; which is a big jump from the first world record being 2 minutes 28 seconds. Today through graphs and data I shall procure an accurate year as to when a human shall swim 50 meters in under a minute.

Obtaining data:

I looked through the recorded world records and listed them chronologically in a spreadsheet. With the axis titles being: date and time. Date being the year the record was set, and time being the record speed. I decided to do every year from 1902 to 2009 because it would be the most accurate. But when a year had several world records set, I would record only fastest time of that year, because the time changes are extremely miniscule and negligible. When inserting the seconds I first divided by 60 so to get a percentage, because the graph does factor in time.

Graphing data

I then pressed insert then data and statistics turning the spreadsheets info into a graph. After the the data was plotted accordingly to the axis, I pressed menu, analyze and regressions. Then apply the equation (mx+b). This would give me a line of best fit, showing a linear regression that  best fits all of the plots.

Analysis

The equation in the top right hand corner is the equation y=mx+b. The m is the slope of the graph, the slope for this graph is -0.0069, this tells us that the time on world records are exponentially declining; we know this because the slope is negative. The slope also tells us that the changes in the world record are very small, this is visible because the slope is a very small fraction. We can also logically understand this. Take for example: in 1989 the record was 1 minute 46 seconds and 69 milliseconds, the next world record was set a full decade later, yet the change in time was only 35 milliseconds! The 15.555 is the b, or y-intercept. It tells us most where the point would be at the y axis. Which for us is zero years. So at the year zero, the world record for the 50 meter swim would be 15 and a half minutes.

To find the year at which humans will swim 50 meters in a minute; I first two finger clicked on the line, then pressed graph trace. This created a slidable point along the line of best fit, which I was able to use to tell me the year at which a human swim 50 meters in a minute. The plot states that in 2101: the world record for swimming 50 meters in a minute would be a minute.

Conclusion

After all this work we can conclude that: the rate at which the swimming world record is changed and affected is extremely small with. Averaging a 0.0069 second difference per year. Also we can predict that at the year zero the the world record for the 50 meter swim would be an astonishingly slow 15 and a half minutes. But most importantly we can accurately predict that in the year 2101 will be the year the world record for swimming 50 meters in a minute would be a minute.

Edit:
Although I have worked very hard on this document and spent hours in writing on how the graph relates with the real worlds; I was graded poorly on this assignment, somewhat restricting from posting this. Yet I feel confidence in the fact that my teacher is a harsh grader, so I would like to put forth this post.

My tastes in music

I like Rock, not many people like rock; the generalisation of an large branch of music. It having many sub sprouts that can heavily differ to one another despite acquiring the same defining features. I think it started when my brother introduced me to “Guitar hero III” a simple game that allowed me to truly bond with my brother, something that hadn’t been of an occurrence, and for me to be able impress him made me completely abhor the thought of being terrible.

It was from a very young age where the mind is at immensely malleable and impressionable state. Explaining as to why I have such a fondness for rock. This fondness only increased over time as the genre expanded into a large array of music suitable for anyone. Although rock seems to be a great genre, my tastes in music have been notably ostracised. It having a repeating theme of intensity, leading the ratio of plebeians among the consumers to flee from its bewitching and almost evil manner. Whereas I simply appreciate the music for being rough and powerful. I always admired the creativity in the compositions of great bands and their guitarists. Such as: Jimmy Page and Slash, how they could interweave their skill and craftsmanship into music
