1. What relevant words or phrases best describe the stories and speakers you have met?

Fairness and Challenge are 2 words that I would use to describe all 4 of the talks. Fairness, equal luck for everyone was something that I found stood out the most.

The first story, the survival of the Asian Tsunami, was in opinion mainly based on how he, Mr. Hunter, was overly lucky on that day. He shared us some examples of his fortune – 1) was able to escape the large 2nd wave with his children and wife with no one being hurt, 2) made the choice to not stay in the shore but to run up to his hotel above the ground, and 3) him and his wife had forced his children to wear arm floats on their arms although they argued not to. These few choices/actions had led him and his family safety and escape from the tsunami. Mr. Hunter felt “someone was looking out” for him during this event and was appreciative of his luck.

This leads to the second story, Writing in Prison, about Mr. Huntington and his experience with teaching prisoners. He believed that everyone can change and everyone can grow if they try, and he wanted to give everyone an opportunity to be able to. His goal was to “make the place better than he found it” when he first came in, and although many were challenging to encourage education to them, some were able to take GD and some were able to even get a job. His belief and goal relate to fairness – fairness to everyone that people shouldn’t be excluded from their mistakes. This story also relates to equal luck, somewhat to the Tsunami story, but contradicting this. He shared with us the harsh and
