Project Week – India, Jaipur Reflection 1

Day 1 – 26 May 2019

Today was a really slow start, we woke up rather early prepared to go to our service, only to find out that the NGO I-India were closed today. We called Charu who is in charge of us for this service, but to no avail. However, we wanted to play safe and decided to go there to check it out. Luckily, we were able to meet up with Charu. He explains to us that Sundays are off days for the volunteers and children. He told us about the situation of these children, and it shocked me to know that kids as young as 4 are working in sweat shops 12 hours a day. Personally, I feel that, yes it is not ethical, but applying some relativism to the situation, it is the best option for them. Seeing as they are all orphans, with little to no money to support themselves. But, because of the interventions of I-India, we are all relieved that there are altruistic people in Jaipur that make it their mission to help out the children in the streets. That is really eye opening – and I can understand why the actions of service that we carry out could help them out so much!

Today, we helped the kids with alphabets, we matched pictures to alphabets. And also incorporated some fun games to their daily lives – rock, paper, scissors and duck, duck, goose.

Overall, today was really successful. As a group, none of us got lost, found trouble and we were all punctual for our activities. One difficulty I faced was my inability to speak in Hindi, but thankfully my team members were all fluent in the language.
