Lockdown and Online School Thoughts

During mentor time, we were posed with the task of reflecting on our thoughts about the whole coronavirus lockdown and what life is like in quarantine. I think that in total, the lockdown has not been a great experience, but it has been useful.

In terms of how the lockdown is not great, there are a lot of factors that contribute to this. The social aspect of our lives has been critically stunted, because of the fact that we can’t even see any of our friends in person at all. This is challenging because we’re not used to not seeing our friends for more than 2 months. I miss how we would have breaks during school where we could spend time with our friends because those are good times. All I am left with is gaming and calls on platforms such as skype. The second aspect is the online school. Initially, I felt as though online school was bearable, and I was actually more productive than I was in regular school. But as it went on, online school got really boring and very repetitive. I don’t understand why they give us so much work, even though we don’t have exams. The last negative aspect of lockdown is similar to the first because I can barely leave my house unless I exercise. It was nice when I could leave and go wherever I wanted because there is a sense of freedom and happiness in going to different places.

In terms of the lockdown being useful, it has helped me get the time to think about my skills and weaknesses. For example, time management is not a strong area for me, so I’ve tried to solve this by allocating time slots for specific activities and pieces of work. Though there are still days where I procrastinate and don’t do work, in total, I’ve been better at doing homework and not falling behind on classes. I suppose this is also caused by the more time I have because of less commute. Finally, this lockdown has pushed me into working out regularly. This is good because I now have a chance to improve my body, and have the time to work towards it. One challenge of this is that the gym in my condo is closed, so I have to do all the exercises at home and without weights.
