MINDs Tampines Ongoing Reflection

This is my third season participating in this service. I now feel much more confident and comfortable dancing with our clients. There are usually two sets of clients from MINDs Tampines that alternate their visit to UWC on Mondays. In one of the groups I regularly dance with a particular guy as I now know that he recognises me and is comfortable with dancing with me. It is really heartwarming to see him gain confidence throughout the year as he is starting to jump up and down more, he is smiling more and can even sing a few of the lyrics sometimes. There are so many people in the world who have some sort of mental disability or any kind of disability that separates them from other people, so this just shows that with consistent meet ups, a bridge can be formed between them and the rest of the world despite the communication problems. However, I feel that my energy level has been dropping slowly. It is easy to drift towards my friends and not actively dance with the clients especially as it’s after school on a Monday. Normally everyone is tired on that day as it’s right after the weekend. Sometimes when I see my friends slacking off and just talking to each other during service, it is tempting to join them, however I need to remain committed to the purpose of the service- which is to interact with the clients from MINDs.
