Today Steve Dawson presented a presentation about interview techniques. During his presentation, he presented us with five maxims for great answers. In the beginning, he talked about how he his job relating to ESPN Star Sports, Fox Sports and One championship. He also spoke about how he interviewed celebrities around the world. Some examples of questions he had given throughout his speech gave me further insight on how to improve my attitude towards someone and how to ask more high-quality questions. He gave very useful tips that made me rethink how I interacted in daily life.

What assumptions did you bring into this session? What expectations did you have?

I did not really have assumptions but I was expecting it to be something I wouldn’t be able to understand but in the end, it was understandable and very agreeable. Much of what was said was very helpful.

Now that the talk has wrapped, what have you needed to rethink and why?

I need to rethink what I have asked people in the past because sometimes I would try to take initiative in a conversation I would sometimes start by asking them a polar question but the question would be a simple question that responded as yes and no and the conversation would usually just end there. But I feel like I should ask more open ended questions to get a better answer and the conversation can elaborate.

SAND: How has this session clarified what it means to think like a writer – or in your week to week learning?

It has clarified that in order to get good information and a good response you need to take into consideration what you are asking beforehand and to make the question understandable and challenging at the same time. And when the person is responding you are there to be listening to them and shouldn’t interrupt.

SHORELINE: How did this session change or deepen your thinking, whether about the speaker or the story you expected to find?

This deepened my thinking about having an expectation to get a good answer from someone when maybe I should have done something and redirected my question in a better way. And maybe be more direct and remove unnecessary things.

SHIP: What do you think might stay with you from the session? Why?

Some of the techniques carried out in the presentation and the examples that were given.
