When given this task, I was not really inspired and I found that the question was odd yet  very interesting because I have never thought about relating one subject to another. After brainstorming and researching ideas, I finally found similarities between both courses.

Firstly, chemistry and mathematics have the same or very similar skills and approaches. The first skill which is essential for both chemistry and maths is having the ability to logically approach and solve problems. For example, in mathematics when faced with a word problem we first  evaluate the question and try to extract as much information as the question could possibly give us, then we break the problem into smaller parts in order to evaluate, examine and formulate assumptions so that the problem solved will be on the right track. And then finally we choose the best solution in order logically solve the problem. This same approach can also be used to solve mole equations in chemistry.

Another skill that is required for both subjects is the ability to analyse data. This is extremely crucial for both maths and chemistry because it is required in every part course.  Whether you are trying to find trends and patterns in a graph for the ionisation energy of period 2 or analysing a the gradient of a parabola. Without this specific skill, students will not be able to interpret the question properly and truly understand the complex concepts in both worlds of chemistry and mathematics.

The most crucial approach to these subjects  would be to not only accept superficial concepts  and robotically memorise them but being able to understand and apply them throughout the whole syllabus. If a student memorises concepts without properly understanding them, he or she might not do so well in other topics where theories and concepts are carried on as they might have forgotten it or not have the sufficient knowledge to apply it with other various concepts and theories.

Having good numerical and technical skills will also enable the student to excel in both subjects as it is essential that you have a strong base in numerical skills in order to do simple manipulation calculations throughout both subjects.
