“I agreed with my mother. I too tied to think only of life. However, it wasn’t always easy: at school, they lined us up twice a day to mourn the war dead. They put on funeral marches and we had to beat our breasts.”
(Satrapi 95)
“Since the dawn of time, dynasties have succeeded each other but the kings have always kept their promises. The Shah kept none.” (Satrapi 11)
“I didn’t know what justice was. Now that the revolution was finally over once and for all, I abandoned the dialectic materialism of my comic strips. The only place i felt safe was in the arms of my friend.” (Satrapi 53)
I have selected the second quote and will be defending how it is morally just by Satrapi’s description of the Shah regime during the Iran war. Throughout the graphic novel, the Shah regime was described as increasingly oppressive, brutal, corrupt and was perceived negatively by the Iranian society. When the Shah regime took power, there was a lot of controversy because the majority of the people did not agree with his beliefs and his view on the Quaran. The Shah regime promised protection of the population whilst abiding the Quaran. However this was not the case and thousands of citizens died from Shah’s police and army who abused women, children and men in the streets. This quote is morally just as it truly represents the cruelty of the Shah regime and sheds light on the mistreatment of Iranians during the war
