Activity and Creativity: Culturama China 2017 2

After many hours spent learning and practicing our choreography, we were able to successfully perform at Culturama on the 11th of November. As I have mentioned in previous posts, I enjoyed challenging myself to go outside of my comfort zone through performing on stage. However, I feel that this experience was also a brilliant opportunity for me to connect with my culture (LO6) on a deeper personal level.

Through participating in China Culturama, I felt as if I was able to gain a greater understanding of Chinese traditional dance, an art form I had not had previous exposure to. My participation in the dance opened up another topic of conversation between my grandparents, my parents, and myself. They were particularly interested as to why I had chosen to take part in this activity, and I found myself eager to find out more about other traditional Chinese arts. I feel that this is important as the Chinese diaspora is becoming increasingly big. From personal experience, cultural integration is one of the key issues that Overseas Chinese may face – for example, I have often felt out of place regardless of whether I am in the UK, China, or in Singapore. Exposure to and appreciation of the arts can stimulate conversation with family members (or other “gatekeepers” of the culture, as we learnt in psychology) and could be a platform for people like myself to reconnect with their culture.
