SocioCultural Approach Recap

In which way does your social identity influence you?

I think that being a girl and a Chinese influences my social identity because this is what defines my identity and it’s who I am. It influences my behavior and how I act towards certain things for e.g. having to be a polite and feminine girl at all times influences my actions and because I was brought up with this thought, this identity becomes salient whenever I am reminded that I am girl. As a Chinese, I think I am much more conservative and as I have an asian background, my ideology and morals is shaped by my culture.

  1. I think it is interesting how your culture as a female Chinese has effected your behaviour to be more conservative because those are the social culture norms that you are faced with. What are the social pressures(if any) that caused you to adopt these behaviours? How did you learn these behaviours, in China? or are you a third culture kid and your parents have taught you these values?

  2. I think it is interesting how you sort of analyse yourself by understanding how your background and ethnicity/culture has influenced your social identity and behaviour. It shows a great sense that you know yourself very well and thereby know exactly what is best for you or why you might act a specific way.
