Women in Contemporary Society

“A woman cannot be herself in the society of the present day, which is an exclusively masculine society, with laws framed by men and with a judicial system that judges feminine conduct from a masculine point of view.” – Henrik Ibsen

Henrik Ibsen said that in 1878. Yet, these words still ring true in the ears of people of the 21st century. They say there is equality, but when we are seeing such obvious gaps between the rights of women and men, how can we believe such a lie? The pay gap between the two genders are unmatched, women being offered less money for the same job as men. Boys get more education than girls in many countries, being seen as more valued than girls. Women has low participation rates as political leaders, and now laws are being framed by men in suits, making decisions for women’s bodies. Abortion is illegal and/or unavailable in many countries, giving women barely any rights regarding their own body.

Yes, we are aware that women’s rights, or rather, gender equality, have gone very far throughout the years, but it is not enough. We need to fight till the very last percent of the wage gap is demolished, where there is education for everyone and anyone, and where men see women as equals and respect their bodies like it was their own. That is a world worth fighting for.
