First Reflection- EA Global Politics

Posted on

Global Politics IA is not only a result of what you have learnt about in the whole year but also about choosing and analysing a political issue that you are inclined towards. The EA gives us an opportunity to engage and learn about political issues in our surrounding.

I had to choose a political issue depending on where I was going to spend a lot of my time during my summer break, hence, I chose my political issue based in India. As India is a very populated, developing nation it provided me with a wide range of option to choose my political issue. It was difficult to choose a political as I needed to choose an issue that I am inclined towards. Eventually, I choose the rights of the LGBTQ community, especially transgender rights,  in India as I feel it’s not completely explored.

The Transgender community in India have been facing a lot of financial as well as social problem from the people in the country. As India has been having the tradition of believing in superstition the Hijras ( transgender community) have not been completely accepted in society. Some communities are marginalised, hence, face the problem of poverty and lack of facilities like health care, prestigious jobs, education, etc. in the country. Doing a political engagement would provide me with an opportunity to explore the injustice faced by them, how are their problems addressed, what is the government doing, etc. Another reason for choosing to do political engagement with the Transgender community in India was that I would never think about planning to work with them. As global politics IA gives me the freedom to choose anything I am interested in me, I choose something that I would never do and challenge myself.

For my EA activity the political key concepts I would be focusing on would be human rights, legitimacy, equality and development. I would also be focusing on the issue of the identity of the Hijra community in India.

For my political engagement, I would be doing an internship with an organisation called Global Rights Foundation which works for the rights of the transgender community. I would do some activities and interview people from the community and get to know their views on the rights. To do so, I need to focus decide what a good political issue question and have good questions. I am also interviewing and planning to shadow or attend a session hosted by himHarish Iyer who is an LGBTQ activist. Interviewing him would provide me with a political perspective on this issue. I would get to know what the government is doing or any other movements are done to support them.

Overall, I am really excited about the EA, learning something new and exploring new ideas.

Reflection before Easter break- IFP Singapore

Challenges and what we are currently doing:

IFP Singapore is in its very important stage as we are planning our activities that we are going to do in our conference. We are palnning about how our day should look like, logistics, media etc. Though we are on a very important stage of planning our conference we have been having conflicts about who will do what, especially about what our activity should be. It’s very difficult to come to a consensus when there are so many people with different ideas. Hence we end up spending a lot of time in discussing what we should do in a group. Therefore we need to start giving priority and divide our work as we have less time and we need to so more. I think overall with logistics and media we are doing fine. It’s just that we need to put all our ideas together and plan our day according to given the time of activities.

IFP Singapore – 1 st reflection

IFP Singapore is conferences that happen in the start fo the academic year in high school. It involves both telling the high school student especially the students in grade11 about IFP and why it is worth joining. It helps in choosing IFP student in the upcoming year. I think the challenge of joining IFP Singapore is that the conference is the next academic year and for me, as I would be in grade 12 the start of the year could be difficult. So it might be difficult to attend IFP session and then do the conference. It would also include promoting IFP in school which would take a lot of time in the school. Hence, I need to be super organised and plan whatever I am going to do. I feel IFP Singapore comes with a lot of responsibility as we help in making student decisions about whether they want to join IFP or not. Therefore we need to give our best and make sure we are best in proving our mission.

Special Olympic- reflection before easter break

Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively:

Special Olympics with us to help and play badminton with the athletes with a special need. Hence, it is very important for us to plan our day to avoid any confusion. Working together also helps is reducing the burden on one person. It also makes us more focused and we avoid one person to do one everything. To do that we have created a spreadsheet where we wrote which person is going to do what in each session. One person has to conduct a badminton activity whereas the other a fun activity. This helps us to divide our work and work efficiently in a group. Working in a team is always fun as you share responsibilities as the more the better. I think the best think about my service is people are very organised and wrote down what the have done while conducting a session so if anyone of us forgets anything or our confused what we have to do for a fun session we can just have a look and conduct the. This helps everyone and this is how everyone knows what we are doing. This record of what we are going to do is also useful to people who will be doing the service next year. I think being super organized in a group is very beneficial.

Kahaani 2019 – Final Reflection

Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process:

In Kahani, the challenge for me was to learn a new dance form a different part of India. Though I am from it was still a problem as I am from a different part of the country. So I need to take care if I am doing right or wrong. I need to also take care that my costume is fine. I think it was also challenging to maintain the different forms in the dance. for me personally, the most challenging thing was to remember the dance steps as it was pretty fast and complicated. For that, I needed to practice for a very long time over and over again to ensure that I remember them and my dance is perfect.

Kahani is a very special memory of the UWC journey.  A lot of people coming together to raise money for the NGO in India to help them for the education of the handicapped people. Almost high school is involved in including the teacher. Even what is more eciting is seeing the teachers dancing , practing with it and their excitment making us even more deicated for our perfoemces. Overall Kahani was fun and exciting.

Things I need to focus on:

  • prioritising stuff
  • being organised
  • concentrating more
  • having faith in myself
  • making sure I plan accordingly about how I want to study
  • not getting influence
  •  not getting affected by external pressure

I feel this mock didn’t g good because I was not organised. I need to be focused and not procrastinate as the more I would procrastinate I would be not able to complete the work. For the next term, I need to try new strategies to make sure I do well.

EE – Reflective statement

I have decided to write my EE in Hindi. The reason for choosing to do Hindi EE was that it would be a bot different and would be in a different language. Doing a Hindi gives me an opportunity to look into my nation India and my culture and learn something new about my culture, traditions and country. For my EE I wanted to do something related to women empowerment and the influence of literature during the I British period.Hence I choose – Gaura by Rabindranath Tagore and Charitraheen by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Both the books were written during the British rule in India.  . The books are written by Bengali writers and set up in Calcutta and shows the strong representation of women during strong socio-political conditions in India. I am really looking forward to write my EE in Hindi . It would be difficult but I would do my research  and give my best.
