R3

If I were to undertake this EE again and aim to maximize efficiency, I would stay focused on the controversy surrounding Dr. Katie Bouman as it was what my essay focused on in the end. Perhaps, staying focused on this topic could have helped me observe trends in language use that I have overlooked. However, researching differences between the media’s treatment of male and female scientists assured me that the attitude towards Bouman on social media, that I thought was problematic, is a part of a broader trend in the misogynistic attitudes echoed across social media. Uncovering the reasons behind the misogyny was interesting. Initially, I thought it may be rooted in the value placed on traditional gender roles, yet, I was surprised to find that the sexism may have stemmed from other sources, such as insecurity, instead. Moreover, I discovered my passion for intensive research and evaluating the implications and nuances of modern language use while writing this EE. Despite my initial struggle to find an appropriate direction for this EE, I am happy with the path that I took as it has inspired me to become critical of language in media and explore its implications.

RC2 reflection

As highlighted by the unfocused nature of my first draft, my research so far has been excessively general and thus unsuccessful. My takeaway from the experience of writing my first draft is the importance of analyzing primary texts and condensing parts of my EE that are descriptive instead of analytical. This calls for a change in my EE writing approach. Going forward, I plan to zoom in on the controversy surrounding Dr. Katie Bouman’s role in the acquisition of the Blackhole picture. To write an insightful EE on the this issue I will develop my understanding of the controversy and it’s links to the treatment of female scientists in general by analyzing the discussions surrounding this controversy on Reddit. Using these discussions as my primary sources I plan to breakdown the significance of the language used in Reddit posts about Bouman to present a cohesive argument: the treatment of female scientists like Dr. Katie Bouman reflects the chauvinistic ideology held in society today.

FOA 2 refection

Overall, I believe I had a far better understanding of the FOA task and its expectations as I completed my second FOA than my first.  The primary feedback I received after my first FOA was that I did not pay enough attention to the macro elements of my FOA. Initially, I had neglected to discuss the context, audience, and purpose of the text I was analyzing. Moreover, I had failed to go over the conventions of the text type of the text I was discussing and I did not analyze the values of the community I was discussing. So, for my second FOA, it was important for me not to repeat the same mistakes. Therefore, I ensured that I highlighted these macro elements in my FOA sufficiently and used them to guide the structure for close analysis. As a result, I found that I was able to make my FOA cohesive and logical which was something I feel I lacked in my first attempt.

LO 6 Local service

This year, I have had the unique opportunity to work with the Tan Tok Sen hospital as my local service. My service has included working and interacting with HIV positive and AIDS patients along with patients suffering from some other diseases such as tuberculosis. This experience has taught me a lot, not just about what their conditions are physically, but this experience has also provided me with some insight into their mental and emotional wellbeing. Isolation has been a reoccurring issue we work towards preventing for these patients. Due to the stigma behind diseases such as AIDS, patients are often deserted by their families and friends and feel isolated and lonely which not only hinders their recovery and treatment but also keeps them from being able to accept their illness and move past with an optimistic attitude. So, accompanying these patients and listening to their stories has given me a unique perspective on patient care, allowing me to understand that caring for people often extends far beyond taking care of their physical illnesses.

Summer internship

  • If you imagine yourself at the end of your World of Learning Week internship, how might you know that it has been a success?
  • What might be some things you hope to be more confident in doing at the end of the work experience that you are not as confident doing right now?
  • What pieces of evidence might you want to collect to determine the success of your WOL internship?
  • What challenges might you face and what strategies might you employ in these situations?
  • What resources available to you might you tap to ensure a successful internship?
  • If you could refine it to one goal, what would be the most important one to pay attention to this summer?
